2 weeks left to qualify for World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship

Accenture Match Play ChampionshipThe window of opportunity for players to move inside the top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and qualify for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship is quickly closing as championship week approaches. Only two weeks remain for players to either improve their seeding position or move inside the top 64 in the OWGR and earn a berth at the first World Golf Championships of the year, held at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain. The cutoff date to qualify for the Accenture Match Play Championship is Monday, February 14.

Englishman Ian Poulter (No. 12) will defend the Walter Hagen Cup when the Accenture Match Play Championship returns to Southern Arizona, February 21-27.

“Time is running out for players to secure their spot in the field at the Accenture Match Play Championship via the Official World Golf Ranking,” said Wade Dunagan, Accenture Match Play Championship Executive Director. “Regardless of which players currently on the ‘bubble’ qualify, we will welcome an exceptionally strong field to The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, and look forward to an exciting week of head-to-head competition.”

Two former U.S. Open champions reside on the “bubble” at No. 63 and No. 64 in the OWGR entering this week’s action.  Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, who claimed the 2007 U.S. Open and has competed in each Accenture Match Play Championship since 2005, stands at No. 63 while 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover is the man directly on the “bubble” at No. 64. Glover played the Accenture Match Play Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2010. Both players are in the field this week at the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

PGA TOUR rookie Jhonattan Vegas continues his rapid ascension in the OWGR. One week removed from his first PGA TOUR victory at the Bob Hope Classic, Vegas finished T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Since the start of the PGA TOUR season, Vegas has climbed from No. 182 in the OWGR to No. 69. He is vying to become the first Venezuelan to qualify for the Accenture Match Play Championship and is in the field this week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
