Ahwatukee Country Club - PLAY A LEGEND

Ahwatukee Country ClubArizona golf has a decorated history that includes many recognizable names. Nicklaus and Palmer frequently competed in the “Phoenix Open” (now the Waste Management Phoenix Open). Mickelson, Mayfair, Casey, Park and many others made waves on the collegiate front while playing at Arizona State University.

One such figure that may not have the “name” recognition of the likes of Mickelson, Nicklaus and Palmer left an indelible stamp on Arizona Golf: Johnny Bulla. A member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame, Bulla won an astounding 14 Arizona Opens. His record on tour included runner-up finishes in the Masters, U.S. Open, and twice in the British Open. He won the 1941 L.A. Open and was a traveling companion of the great Sam Snead. He was the first professional to fly his own plan (he founded Arizona Airways, which today is Frontier Airlines) and he could play golf left handed as well as he played right handed. Bulla passed away on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2003 but his legacy lives on as he designed a handful of historic Arizona golf courses.

One such course is Ahwatukee Country Club. Bulla designed “the country club” in 1972 in a way that offers a blend of traditional golf with mature tree lined fairways, parkland style features, while serving up views of the South Mountain foothills that are dotted with saguaros and desert scape. The 6,713 yard, par 72 layout offers gently angled fairways lined with 40 year-old mature trees. There are carefully sculpted mounding and strategically placed bunkers throughout the layout. Yet most green complexes are open in front inviting lower running shots selections for a varied approach.

In addition, a third of the golf holes on the course have water hazards that come into play to test your mettle and keep you coming back for more. A popular tract for area residents and visitors alike, the club’s popularity is enhanced due in part to it’s convenient location that is just minutes from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and within close proximity to east valley cities of Tempe and Chandler.

Frequent players at Ahwatukee Country Club should inquire about the flexible membership options as well as the Ahwatukee’s popular frequent player program – The Ahwatukee Gold Card. Gold Cardholders receive a host of benefits including the club’s lowest rates and also preferred golf rates not only at Ahwatukee Country Club but also at the other Ahwatukee Golf Properties in the area, including Club West Golf Club, Ahwatukee Lakes and The Duke Golf Club.
