Golf Superstar Lorena Ochoa and LPGA Hall of Fame Golfer Betsy King to Visit Flagstaff's Pine Canyon

Pine Canyon Club in FlagstaffPine Canyon Club in Flagstaff, a private golf and residential community, announced today that Lorena Ochoa, a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour superstar, will join LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Betsy King for a two-day charity event on September 21 and 22. The GOLF FORE AFRICA event will benefit children infected or affected by the AIDS pandemic in Africa and will raise more than $120,000.

On Sunday, September 21 Ms. Ochoa and Ms. King will host a golf clinic for Pine Canyon members followed by a cocktail reception that evening. On Monday, Ochoa and King will host a “Golf Exhibition.” Eight Pine Canyon members will donate money to play nine holes with the legendary golfers.

King, a Scottsdale resident with six major championships among her 34 victories, was the 2007 Solheim Cup captain. “We chose Pine Canyon because the owner was very supportive of the idea,” King said. “We’re excited that the members have stepped forward to help our cause. It shows the charitable heart of the golf community.”

Ms. King founded Golf Fore Africa after seeing first-hand the faces of AIDS and the terrible plight of these orphan children in Rwanda in 2006. “So far we have raised about $325, 000,” King said. “The first $250,000 went to our first project in Mudasomwa, Rwanda. We provided help to families in that community that have been infected or affected by AIDS. The money provided basic health care, school fees and uniforms for children, plus food and clean water for families in that community.”

King said the next two projects are building a clinic in Rwanda that will provide basic health care, malaria treatment, and ARV drug distribution, and also provide housing for AIDS orphans in a community in Lesotho, Africa where there is a 29 percent AIDS infection rate. The project in Rwanda is a combined effort with World Vision. The one in Lesotho is with World Vision and Habitat for Humanity. King’s new goal is to raise over $500,000 over the next few years.

Ochoa, who attended the University of Arizona, is a Mexican golfer and currently the No. 1 ranked woman golfer in the world. “Lorena Ochoa has been so gracious to help us last year and this year,” King said. “She is an unbelievable golfer and person and the best superstar the LPGA could ever hope for. She will provide a great show for the people who attend the clinic or the round on Monday.”

Day of event tickets for the exhibition on September 22 will be released to Pine Canyon members, Flagstaff Medical Center, and Flagstaff city officials. They may walk the Jay Morrish-designed championship golf course that day.
