Las Sendas Golf Club - Better Than Ever!

Las Sendas Golf Club - Better Than Ever!Sixteen years ago, The Las Sendas Golf Club, a 5-Star golf club situated in the scenic foothills of east Mesa, made a sparkling debut on the Arizona golf landscape. Late last year, the “new” Las Sendas was officially reborn.

New is the operative word at Las Sendas. There are new facilities, new membership opportunities and a savvy, new ownership group that is poised to make Las Sendas Golf Club one of the Southwest’s finest golf facilities.

Las Sendas is unique compared to most of its desert golf brethren. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. (his initial solo design in the Valley of the Sun) to coexist with the natural splendor of its East Valley location, Las Sendas is, in Jones’ own words, “true” desert golf. Much less dirt and rock were moved in this layout than many other area courses of the same era, creating an experience that the renowned designer describes as “a nature walk through the desert, attracting you with beauty and challenging you with shot options.”

In fact, the club’s name, Las Sendas, was carefully selected from this observation and in Spanish, translates to “The Pathways.” For history and Western movie aficionados, the land where Las Sendas is located also has significance. In the 1930s, the parcel was owned by Tom Mix. Mix was Hollywood’s first Western megastar and is noted as having helped define the genre for all cowboy actors who followed. Legend has it that he and good friend John Wayne used to ride horses in these hills.

Las Sendas has been ranked the “10th Most Challenging” and “One of the Top 100 Courses in the Nation” by Zagat Survey. Even though it can be a stern test of golf, Las Sendas is playable and forgiving if you choose tees that match your game, not your ego. For low handicappers, it’s a stout 72.5/145 rating and slope from the 6,914-yard tips but there are five more reasonable options for you to select from. Each gives players a different perspective of this East Valley gem.

Las Sendas Golf Club - Better Than Ever!

Las Sendas invites you to experience Jones’ “nature walk” while being treated like a member for a day, or a lifetime, with enticing, available 100 percent refundable memberships. The club has no debt, no mortgage and promises to keep the golf course from being leveraged. This certainly provides promise of longevity in today’s challenging times.

Jones design intention was for you to think your way around Las Sendas, yet he must have known that you’d be distracted by the incredible vistas from their 1,800-foot elevation. That’s the conundrum of Las Sendas. Hidden amid the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscape is a hell of a golf course!

Beautiful? Pictures actually understate the grandeur of the three-dimensional view not only up/down and sideways, but out, to Camelback Mountain to the west and the Superstition Mountains to the east, and the entire valley floor below.

Much of your pathway at Las Sendas is natural as you drive through the desert, weaving between cacti that are, indeed, in play. Many of the rolling fairways are elevated above the desert floor, leaving you options to play low into the large, steeply-sloped greens, or fly the ball in on your approaches. Challenging? Survive the daunting two opening holes (the longest par 4 and par 5 on the front side and handicapped as the two toughest on the nine), and conquer the mountainous stretch at 4, 5 and 6, you might be in for a career round. The spectacular 4th is one of the few holes on the course where you’re probably better off laying up off the tee, short of a desert wash with a longer iron approach straight into the mountain that’ll be looking over your shoulder for eight of the next ten holes. Trust us, and the GPSequipped carts, the course does get a little easier from here on in. Another design feature at Las Sendas you might not recognize until you’ve finished is that the five par 3s likely will offer the opportunity to hit five different clubs off the tee. The fifth and 11th holes play right into the mountain.

The 7th, the shortest par 3 at just 120 yards from the silver tees, has a treacherous green with at least five foot of elevation changes between the two tiers. Take an extra club at the uphill par-3 11th so you won’t be disappointed by its false front apron, and don’t miss the green at either of the remaining par 3s. The putting surfaces at 14 and 16 are large, but very wellbunkered. Even if you’re not playing from the tips, we recommend the sight from the back tees at the 13th when you leave the mountain.

The views of the Superstition and Usery Mountains off the elevated tee box are breathtaking. The rest of the par 4 is downright fun, concluding with an approach across a desert wash to the green. If you have any breath left, it will likely be taken away by the vistas behind the double dogleg par-5 18th hole. If the views to the White Tank Mountains some 70 miles to the west don’t draw your eye away from the task at hand (the lakes short-right and long-left off the tee) the enticement to aim your second shot right at Camelback Mountain and carry that second lake to reach the green in two will be tempting.

Clearly, the course is the star at Las Sendas. But the new amenities make the first trip worthwhile and future visits more likely. The list of improvements, costing upwards of $4 million dollars, is expansive and includes: a renovated and expanded clubhouse featuring three restaurants, an elegant pro shop complete with private locker rooms for the growing membership, an air conditioned comfort station and The Oasis Snack Bar located between the 3rd hole and the 14th tee, a halfway house and additional public restrooms located near 10, a club storage facilities, shoe shine room, a brand new cart fleet and more.

The aforementioned restaurants deserve a little more ink. The Rusty Putter Grille, a comfortable sports lounge, offers a wide array of menu items from breakfast to dinner. Open daily for lunch, the Viewpoint Patio features live entertainment Wednesday through Saturday evenings and boasts spectacular views of the valley. The “ace” of the Las Sendas dining lineup is Bogey’s Steak & Seafood. For the crowning touch, complimentary limousine service is offered with your reservation!

Bogey’s is a 5-Star Prime Steakhouse and is themed after the late cultural icon Humphrey Bogart. Bogey’s serves exquisite cuts of Prime USGA beef as well as fresh seafood selections. An impressive wine list and resort-style service add to your Bogey’s experience. For the crowing touch, Bogey’s offers complimentary limousine service with your reservation!

As Robert Trent Jones, Jr. says, “It is a Wild West Course, and you’d better bring your six-gun, because you’re going to have to shoot it here.” Happy birdie hunting.

Las Sendas Golf Club is conveniently located in east Mesa with easy access from the 202 freeway (Power Road exit). See the Golfer’s Guide map on page 59.
