Love at the TPC-Scottsdale

The TPC-Scottsdale Stadium Course is nationally known for being the host venue of The Waste Management Phoenix Open affectionately recognized locally as “The Greatest Show on Grass”.

In addition to being the home course for the TOUR’S most attended golf event, it’s also indisputably one of Arizona’s finest courses.

This past Monday, on Valentine’s Day, the TPC or more precisely the 18th green of the Stadium Course, was the site for a very unique marriage proposal.

Will You Marry Me?Shane Kuyper, 23 of Phoenix, Arizona proposed to his girlfriend Coley Lyon, 23 of Yorba Linda, California. Now to the particulars.

Kuyper, a 7 handicapper had dated Lyon for well over a year. They broke up in 2010 but were reunited just two short weeks ago. Their “first” date (the second time around) was at this year’s Phoenix Open. While there enjoying the golf, the festivities and each other’s company, Kuyper vowed that he would soon engage Lyon and that he would do it at the TPC.

So after buying the ring and devising a clever plan, he made a tee time for two for February 14th.

“Our break up was a learning process. During that time, I learned an incredible amount about her, how much character she has and how amazing she truly is,” said Kuyper. “She also loves to golf and is a solid player, a 10 handicap who plays from the men’s tees, so I said let’s play the TPC on Valentine’s.”

Kuyper had over 40 friends and family discreetly waiting at the facility’s clubhouse. After the preceding group of golfers exited the final green, his brother and chief accomplice, Jace, donned an official TPC caddy suit and deftly placed the ring in the cup.

“As I got to the box on 18, I was so nervous and my hands were sweating. Coley nearly chipped in on her third shot so I “let” her putt out.  She did and when she went to retrieve her ball, she saw the ring box in the cup. She proceeded to stare at it for 20-30 seconds.  During that time, I dropped to my knee and asked her to marry me.”

Thankfully she said “YES” and the celebration was underway. The couple is planning an August 2011 wedding ceremony.

She said YES!

For the record, Shane shot 80 and Coley 87. Golfer’s Guide offers our warmest congratulations to the future bride and groom.
