Accenture Match Play Championship: Global Summit of Golf Comes to Dove Mountain

Geoff OgilvyA star-studded field representing the top-ranked golfers in the world will be the first to test the newest Jack Nicklaus Signature course, the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain, when the 7,800-yard layout hosts the World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play Championship Feb. 25 - March 1.

"We have the top 64 players in the world based on the World Golf Rankings, and I believe that that would represent arguably the best field in all of the golf," said Accenture Executive Director, Wade Dunagan at the event's media day.

The golf course, which was designed with match play in mind, opened less than a month ago. It's the first phase of the Ritz-Carlton development and will eventually be joined by a resort and spa.

The top 64 available players from the Official World Golf Rankings released on Monday, February 16, will qualify for the event as the tournament returns to Arizona for the third year. In both 2007 and 2008, the South Course at The Gallery Golf Club hosted the event.

Last year the tournament was won by the world's No. 1, Tiger Woods, who defeated American Stewart Cink 8 and 7 to win his third Accenture Match Play Championship. The result of the 36-hole championship match was the largest margin of victory in a final in the 10-year history of the WGC event.

Among the players expected to compete are Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim, 19-year-old phenom Rory McIllroy and 2006 Accenture Match Play champion, Geoff Ogilvy, who was the guest of honor on media day.

Ogilvy defeated Davis Love III 3 and 2 to win the 2006 Accenture Match Play Championship, and captured the Chrysler Classic of Tucson in 2005.

"Tucson has been very, very good to me," he said.

Woods, who declared that he was finally in good health after a lengthy rehabilitation process resulting from a knee injury, hasn't announced as of yet if he intends on defending his title.

"We have no idea yet," Dunagan said, "but we're hoping."

The 2009 Accenture Match Play Championship will take place February 25 - March 1, 2009 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.
