With the completion of the final nine holes of architect Michael Lowry’s first signature golf course design and its subsequent Independence Day Grand Opening, the Texas Hill Country now has another five-star golf facility.

Located a straight shot from downtown San Antonio and less than an hour from the capital city of Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club is a visually stunning and uniquely memorable layout that sets out to challenge more avid and accomplished players by pinching landing areas and employing strategically-placed hazards, while at the same time achieving playability and enhancing enjoyment for the average golfer.

Golfers throughout Central Texas have already discovered the wonders of Vaaler Creek by sampling the back nine, which opened to the public in July 2007. According to Vaaler Creek’s Director of Golf, Adam Grosch, the two nines will complement each other nicely Both sides feature spectacular panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country, an abundance of live oaks and rolling topography.

Single-digit handicappers will find that pulling out driver without taking the obstacles located in the vicinity of the landing areas into account can result in trouble. For better players Vaaler Creek requires a good deal of thought, with an emphasis on placement and threading the needle off the tee box.

Appearances will be deceiving for your average player who takes on Vaaler Creek, which will measure more than 6,800 yards from the tips and play to a par of 72. With plenty of greenside bunkers, manmade waterways, elevation changes and a few tiered fairways the 18-hole championship course looks like a daunting challenge. But players will find the course extremely playable, and those who score well will walk off the 18th green feeling good about the state of their game.

The uniqueness of each hole is the hallmark of Vaaler Creek and is what makes playing this Hill Country course so much fun. Players won’t soon forget the 195-yard par-3 12th hole that features a Pacman-shaped pond that almost surrounds the green completely. Another good example is the 511 yard par-5 10th hole that gives players a choice off the tee between upper and lower fairways with substantially different elevations.

Located within the Rockin’ J Ranch, a community dedicated to resort living and championship golf set upon more than 1,000 rolling acres just south of the charming town of Blanco, Vaaler Creek is used to drawing golfers from every direction.

Grosch said golfers can expect a quality of play “comparable to a high-end resort in San Antonio,” at an attractive price. Until the end of the year, the greens fee to play Vaaler Creek will at most be $55, the cost you’d pay as a non-member on a weekend morning. It’s the same price the course had been charging as a nine-hole facility and that rate will be kept the same for the remainder of 2009 in celebration of the course’s grand opening.

The golf course is positioned as a semi private facility, with property owners of Rockin’ J Ranch receiving a complimentary basic golf membership that entitles them to enjoy their first three rounds each month for free and a discounted rate thereafter. Basic golf memberships can also be purchased by non-property owners. Vaaler Creek offers guests of its members discounted greens fees as well.

For more frequent players, Vaaler Creek offers an annual full membership, which entitles that individual member to unlimited rounds during the year including the cart fees.

Out-of-town golfers now have the opportunity to “Stay and Play” at Vaaler Creek. A bank of brand new, well furnished two- and three-bedroom condos situated around the No. 10 tee box will serve as accommodations for the courses’ guests, starting at $175 per night. Discounted greens fees are a part of the “Stay and Play” package.

Tournaments and Special Events

As the summer sun dips toward the horizon in the burnt orange Texas sky, you can bet quite a crowd will be gathering on the 5,550-square-foot deck that overlooks the 18th fairway at Vaaler Creek. The platform, which is cloaked by two large live oaks trees that rise up through its center and expands out over a large pond, serves as the centerpiece of the club’s tournament and event facilities, and the place to be for a cold beverage when your round comes to an end.

“It’s an awesome place to have a couple of beers and settle your bets,” said Grosch.

The deck, as well as an outdoor pavilion that is currently under construction, will naturally be popular meeting spots for group events such as weddings, golf tournaments and reunions.

This area is also the future site of Vaaler Creek’s clubhouse. It will be located directly behind the 18th green and feature great views of golfers as they approach the final hole, a tough par-4 requiring a 100-yard carry over water to a green that protrudes into a pond.

Even before it opened as an 18-hole facility, Vaaler Creek had a busy tournament schedule. The course hosts a casual fourman scramble once a month, a Thursday night nine-hole two-man tournament, a Friday nine-hole couple’s event and a men’s and women’s best ball scramble is in the works.

Large groups looking to hold an outing at the course will receive discounted rates. Vaaler Creek can handle any size golf tournament, and put together a number of tournament packages from a simple green and cart fee event to an all-inclusive tournament package with scoring, range balls, tee prizes, hole-in-one prizes, drink tickets and food and beverage service. This package is priced around $75 per person depending on the size of the group.

Practice Facilities and Golf Instruction

Vaaler Creek Golf ClubA beautiful driving range equipped with seven practice flags from 50 yards to 350, and a giant teeing area welcomes golfers who want to warm up or revisit a few swing thoughts from the day’s round. Vaaler Creek has also recently introduced a short game area complete with areas for chipping and sand shots.

The practice facility is located across the street from the pro shop, which is styled like a 1860s ranch house, and has a separate parking lot so golfers can drive directly to it. A golf ball dispenser is conveniently located inside the range building.

Vaaler Creek also offers an “E-range key” option to make practice easier and less expensive. The e-range key is a small plastic device that you can carry on your key ring. It acts like a debit card used just for range balls.

Golf instruction is offered at the facility by a full staff of PGA Professionals. Individual and group lessons are available, in addition to a series of clinics. This summer Vaaler Creek will be hosting a number of adult clinics and junior golf camps.
