A New Day Dawns at a Texas Classic

This once-working cattle ranch is now home to 7,022 spectacular yards with water on 11 holes. The course is also guarded by 44 bunkers , four waste bunkers and slick greens of Tif-Eagle grass rolling to Tour specifications. It will cost 72 shots to p r this course that sits on the Balcones Fault line.

Just north of this historic property sits the southern- most tip of the Hill Country and just south of that sits the northern-most tip of the Coastal Plains. This makes for one of the most tranquil settings in San Antonio, Texas.

Did you know that this is the only course in San Antonio where you can sit outside and enjoy a “true Texas evening” where the stars are bright and the moon is clearly full? Their famous Liar’s Pit holds some of the best shots ever made. You won’t believe all the birdies flying around that thing.

That brings to mind a favorite story told by an old retired Air Force Colonel; his foursome of senior golfers hit the course with waning enthusiasm. “These hills are getting steeper as the years go by,” one complained. “These fairways seem to be getting longer too,” said the General. “The sand traps seem to be bigger than I remember them too,” said the sergeant. After hearing enough from his buddies, the oldest and wisest of the four of them, at 87 years old, piped up and said, “Just be thankful we're still on the right side of the grass!”

Recently, one of South Texas’ best agronomists joined the team and has made a world of difference out here from tees to greens. He brings a ton of experience from La Cantera and The Texas Open and also The Dominion and The SBC Championship. If you see him stopped somewhere on the course, you better jump on the opportunity to say hello.

If you are inclined to see what course we are writing about, just go out Highway 90 towards Castroville and take a right on 211 and once you top that hill take a peak to your right, we’ll be waiting on you here. To make your tee time call 210.677.0027.
