Course Review: Avery Ranch Golf Club

Avery Ranch Golf ClubIn the increasingly popular area of Northwest Austin, Avery Ranch is a 1,800-acre master-planned community. Our focus, however, is on the 226 acres that house the Avery Ranch Golf Club.

Stretching out at over 7,100 yards, the 18-hole championship course has five sets of tees that offer a nice challenge for the low-handicapper, while creating an enjoyable golfing experience for all levels of players.

The architect, Andy Raugust, who designed some great tracts with Nicklaus Golf, has done a phenomenal job at Avery Ranch. Rolling terrain, oak-lined fairways and a 60-acre lake are part of what makes this course unique indeed.

The condition of the course is amazing, and has been that way every time I have made the journey there. From the tee boxes, to the fairways, and up to and including the greens, the grounds crew gets an A+!

During this review it was quite a full tee sheet, from what we could see. We were however on the tee on time. The friendly and knowledgeable course marshals were sure to keep the flow going. We weren’t being pushed, nor pushing the group ahead. We kept a nice pace going throughout, and but for one extra long stop at the turn (thanks to our publisher Mike “Radio Ringer” Ratchman) we had a great round – right Esteban (a.k.a. Pat Hill)?

Oh, and what would this review be without the mention of the Beverage Cart Girls? The nice young ladies working that day definitely earned their keep – considering the group I was with!

With the Tif Eagle greens and 419 Bermuda fairways, many say they are the best in the Austin area. I tend to agree with them on this one. Even though this course is relatively young (opened in 2002), the carefully sculpted layout through mature trees gives it that “older” course feeling.

If you’re reading this article, you need to play Avery Ranch. We gave it 6 thumbs up (there were 3 of us playing – get it?!). We are actually developing a formal Golfer’s Guide Rating System and can tell you that whatever the top rating turns out to be, Avery Ranch is worthy of it. Plus, to make it an even more enjoyable round, they have recently brought in ProLink GPS systems – one of the best around. Those systems are installed in the all new EZ-GO RXV golf cars.

The extra touch that is always present at Avery Ranch Golf Club is what brings me – and you – back time and again.
