Crystal Falls Golf Club

Breathtaking! That is the best way to describe both the views and the golf at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander. I have been fortunate to play some of the most scenic courses in our region. Crystal Falls definitely ranks up there with some of the be t views of the Texas Hills Country, and is one of the best-kept secrets in the Austin area.

The course itself is just as scenic. Though not a long course by current industry standards, the architecture used in the design of this course is phenomenal. Using the slopes of the fairways is key in playing this gem. The dramatic drop from tee to green on some of the par-3s will make you think a moment on club choice – my advice: at least one club less in normal conditions. This course really takes advantage of the natural terrain including hills, creeks, bluffs, and trees. Couple that with running streams, endless views, deep canyons and wild turkey, not only is the course a lot of fun -- the price is a real bargain!

The fact that this course is a municipal is in itself a testament that even small cities on the outskirts of a State Capital can be home to great golfing facilities.

The 18-hole, par 72 facility features 6,654 yards of golf from the tips. As mentioned earlier, “short” by industry standards, Crystal Falls is a fair, but challenging golf course that is sure to test the skills of any golfer. You are saying to yourself “Fair but challenging? How can it be both?” For starters, club selection and course management skills are key ingredients in mastering Crystal Falls. That is the challenging part. The fairness comes in with the natural slopes and undulations which when played smartly, garner more rewards than penalties. This course is a nice tract for all skill levels, as the tee boxes are designed with the course layout, not just the distance, in mind.Crystal Falls Golf Club is quickly becoming a popular choice for area golf tournaments and outings. According to Grant Collyns, General Manager at Crystal Falls, “Several corporations,
associations, and private groups host their tournaments here each year; with most returning year after year!”

There are also some on-course changes being made. Wes Skaggs, PGA, Head Professional tells us “We’re changing up some of the tee boxes to give some more risk/reward opportunities to those playing from the tips.” He also noted that some fairway work is being done to “split the fairway in order to slow the ball down a bit”.

Crystal Falls is rated at a 72.3, with the slope of 126. Water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes, and now that we’re not in drought conditions, the streams are flowing and provide even more scenic viewing.

Crystal Falls has all the amenities: snack bar, putting green, driving range, on-site PGA professional, on-board GPS units in each cart, and a very nice, recently renovated club house.

So if you’re looking for great views, great golf, and a great bargain, put Crystal Falls Golf
Club on your list.
