Maverick Golf Club-A private experience for the public course golfer!

Golfers love a fair and interesting challenge. A river that sluices along the upper edge of a dogleg right. Bunkers that stand sentinel around a generous green with forward pin placement enticing the player to go for the hole. A meandering creek that has a golfer reaching for first one club then its companion as he debates whether or not to fly the water or lay up for another shot. Maverick Golf Club in Floresville, Texas, a short drive southeast of San Antonio, brings all this into play in a public—yes, public-golf course nestled in the 500-acre community of Avalon. Greenery and residences join together for an exceptional living experience designed to enchant. Offering a variety of price points, models are now open for this magnificent community that will include 900 to 1000 homes ranging from garden homes to luxury estates in addition to golf course lots.

When Larry “the Hawk” Hawkins designed and developed Maverick Golf Club, the goal was to create a unique golfing adventure unlike any other in the San Antonio area. Drawing on his experience developing two other championship golf courses in Texas, Hawkins decided to give golfers the pristine flavor of a links golf course on the front nine, with its moguling and wide open fairways, then bring them back to the river bottom, oaklined Texas traditional golf course with its tighter fairways and crossing creeks for the back nine.

The golf experience begins with the magnificent topography of the property itself, the beauty of the San Antonio River and the Seguin Creek, which come into play on 13 of the 18 holes, the drive over the gorge on number 11 that then opens to a double fairway and a downhill, blind green or the double creeks on number 15 that challenge both the drive and the second shot-demanding a layup for most golfers. This public course is lush, interesting and beautiful with the heart of a private club. Its rolling hills, the vast vistas of green, water and the ancient oak trees are just part of the Maverick. The greens are large, some multi-tiered, and water is often in play or just in the danger zone ready to snatch an errant shot. The course is challenging but plays fair for both the scratch golfer and the less experienced player. There are often choices to play the hole safely, or with more abandon, depending on skill. Roughs on the front nine, such as on the par-4 fourth hole, will often have love grass that is two feet high. On the par-5 signature third hole, there is a seven-acre lake to carry, the San Antonio River on the left and then a decision—does the golfer try to fly the second lake or lay up?

The par-5 sixth hole creates a challenge for the golfer, a real risk/reward decision on the second shot as the hole usually plays into the Texas wind. Number 16 lays out with a fairly severe dogleg to the right with love grass two feet high and the creek on the left. The challenge is to stay in the middle of the fairway and then gauge the wind as the golfer plays to the par-4. The last hole also has the wind as a companion. It is wide open, with church pew bunkers along the right side, and slightly uphill. The bright spot on this finishing hole is the generous green, just waiting to scoop up the approaching ball, and perhaps funnel it gently toward the cup.

The rewards of enjoying the Maverick not only come on the par-72 course and its impeccable customer service, but at the aqua driving range. This lighted, all-grass aqua driving range is one-of-a-kind and the largest in the San Antonio area at 120-yards wide setting the standard for practice ranges for a 300-mile radius. It provides generous space for driving, honing the short game, fine-tuning chip and bunker shots, plus a 15,000 square foot green for drilling those practice putts home. This is also the location for either a private or group lesson from the Director of Golf, a PGA Professional, certified golf instructor and certified for golf club fitting based on actual ball flight on the driving range.

Atop the aqua driving range is the Clubhouse and Pro Shop at the Maverick, providing a perfect location for a 19th hole replay of the round, and purchasing golf equipment or apparel, while enjoying the view of the golfers on the aqua driving range. It is a particularly tranquil spot at night, with the view of the golfers on the lighted range as part of the experience of the club. The Green Pepper Restaurant, located on the aqua driving range, is popular with golfers and area diners. The menu offers an eclectic fair with outstanding service that extends to the Pavilion, a versatile 1,600 square foot social center that has seen many weddings and corporate outings.
