Olympia Hills Golf and Conference Center

Olympia Hills is just north of San Antonio off of Interstate 35 in Universal City. You can see the 10th hole from the highway and access road, as it sits between two of the areas favorite restaurants – Hooters and Rudy’s.

This Finger, Dye, Spann G
oup layout features dramatic elevation changes of 50 feet or more on 7 holes. Picturesque live oaks are also part of the breathtaking scenery.

The layout includes man-made mounds that border the rolling fairways and greens, making the dreaded short chip or bunker shot very interesting. The greens are attackable at times, and according to the local staff and regular players, your best to stay below the hole. (Isn’t that true for most courses??).

The front nine is very scenic. The views from the tee box on Holes 3, 5 and 8 make it worth the visit just by themselves. The front nine does seem a bit tighter in the fairways than the back, but this is only the beginning of a great round of golf.

Olympia Hills offers 4-sets sets of tees playing to distances and slopes measuring from 6,923 yards at the tips to 5,534 yards on the forward tees. Though not overly long by today’s standards, this course is a good test for any golfer, high, mid, or low handicap. On the first visit, get to know the course and take notes. You can, and most likely will, use every club in your bag at least once.

The overall design and layout of this course provides a wonderful group of par threes. Numbers 5, 7, and 13 all play from extremely elevated tee boxes, and offer great views of the valley. Much of the design is thickly tree-lined, though there are a group of holes that are fairly open on the back side. There are about 56 bunkers, water comes into play on three holes, and the re-routing of the creeks for proper water flow during the rainy season are all noteworthy points about Olympia Hills.

Many courses in the San Antonio region have undulating topography - and Olympia Hills is among them. It makes for a true test of golf, while still being an enjoyment. I would be remiss, however, if I were to fail to mention the famous Beverage Cart Girl Staff. You’ve heard Mike and Dave talk about them on the radio (Golf With an Attitude on AM1420 KGNB Sporting News Radio) since the inception of the show. They’ve even promoted their calendar. Another reason to visit!

Not long ago the City Council of Universal City was in a dilemma of what to do with the young course after recent floods took its toll on parts of the course. The smart decision was made to keep the course, making for many happy return visits to one of my favorite courses in the entire state, not to mention the region.

You owe it to yourself to book your round at Olympia Hills as soon as possible. You can even book weddings and other special events as well. The Olympia Hills Golf and Conference Center is just a click away at www.olympiahillsgolf.com
