The region was recently paid a sterling compliment when the New York Times hailed it as the “No. 1 Vacation Spot in the Nation.” The mild year-round temperatures, plethora of outdoor opportunities, large selection of golf courses, beautiful scenery and the area’s emergence as a prime wine-producing region have combined to make the Hill Country not only a hot tourist area, but a prime retirement location.

“Hill Country” is a vernacular term defined as all or part of twenty-five counties near the geographical center of Texas, including the Frio River Valley, Fredericksburg and Kingsland. 

The Club at ConCanThe Club at ConCan is nestled in the valley formed by the Frio River. The golf course, which was designed by the Austin-based team of Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell, is surrounded by a number of hills with elevations of up to 1,500 feet. The constant presence of elevated topography just adds to the feel of isolation a golfer is sure to experience in an area where you’re likely to encounter deer, rabbits and armadillos.

In Burnet you’ll find the 18-hole Delaware Springs Golf Course, which was given a four star rating by Golf Digest in the magazine’s “Places to Play” listing.

The Delaware Springs Golf Course is cradled by trees and gentle rolling hills near the Highland Lakes. Picturesque and challenging, this Hill Country favorite measures 6,829 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 72.

The Flying L Guest Ranch is a full-service dude ranch resort complete with an 18-hole golf course, fitness area and lagoon. The Flying L golf course is enjoyable for players of all skill levels. This award-winning course totals 6,646 yards. With majestic hills as a backdrop, the remarkable terrain, rolling hills and large oak trees paint each individual hole as a distinct memory.

Lady Bird JohnsonOpened in 1969, the Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course is nestled in the serene beauty of Fredericksburg. The 18-hole golf course is more than 6,400 yards from the tips. It’s been called an excellent country golf course that’s well-maintained while providing its players with excellent scenery.

Lady Bird is marked by some quirky holes that bring water hazards into play, making for exciting risk-reward decisions.

Now open in Kingsland, The Legends Golf Course on Lake LBJ is a planned golf community located along the Colorado arm of Lake LBJ. This scenic course offers solitude, elegance and convenience along with challenging golf. The 18-hole championship course was designed by golf professional Tom Kite and the aforementioned architectural team of Bechtol and Russel. It’s a combination of links style and Hill Country golf.

If you’re not a golfer, the Hill Country still offers plenty to do. Whether it’s bicycling through the rolling hills, enjoying an afternoon hike, sipping margaritas on the deck of your favorite restaurant, tubing on one of the area’s waterways or simply soaking up the sun, this diverse region is one of the most rewarding recreational spots in the country.
