The Hawk Golf Club

The Hawk Golf Club The Hawk Golf Club is quickly making a name for itself on the local scene as the most relaxed and enjoyable golf experience in the Texas Hill Country. The Hawk prides itself in providing not only a great golf experience, but also unmatched entertainment options. All of this is combined with inspiring scenery and traditional aesthetics.

A new smokehouse at the turn makes it quick and easy to grab a bite to eat, pick up a cold towel, or fill the cooler with ice. The open-air venue is perfectly located at the intersection of four different holes, and is equipped with high-definition television so players can check out the leaderboard, or catch the score of the big game while they enjoy their round.

The relaxed dining atmosphere at the Hawk features plenty of authentic Hill Country dishes like sausage wraps and brisket tacos, plus an assortment of ice-cold beers. Golfers who tee it up at The Hawk Golf Club can take comfort in knowing that fast and friendly beverage service is a top priority. The Hawk’s beverage cart now runs every day, all day long, making sure your cooler won’t run dry as you drive further away from the clubhouse.

Bill Smith and his business partner Gary Lawton have made subtle, as well as bold moves to redesign the course to maximize playability and highlight the natural beauty of this Hill Country gem. By deciding to swap holes 2 and 18, and by separating the driving range from the first tee  box with a 12-foot high limestone wall, they were able to give the first tee shot a more secluded feel. The wall also includes an archway that serves as the gateway to your Hawk golf experience, whether you’re walking or riding.

The creation of a waterfall that feeds a meandering creek which crosses the 2nd, 10th and 18th holes now forces players to make shot selections based on risk-reward calculations. Limestone bridges built over the creek harken back to the famed bridgeat the Old Course at St. Andrews. Lawton’s experience with many of the world’s best golf courses, and his professional eye for enhancing natural aesthetics have been a perfect fit for maximizing the potential of this great layout.

All of these changes have contributed to a huge surge in play at the Hawk. “We’ve probably tripled the number of rounds in the last 6 months,” said Smith, Managing Partner and successful area home builder. “We had more rounds in January than the previous owner did in June, July or August of last year. Word is getting out that the Hawk is a fun place to play a great round of golf.”

Once the action on the golf course is over, the fun really begins at The Hawk. With the beautiful tree-covered patio next to the clubhouse, The Hawk may have the best 19th hole in Texas. It has become a popular spot with local and national musicians. Tony Kirby, the course manager and director of golf, who is an aficionado of the local Texas music scene, will often bring in a number of bands to spice up the post-round party with a bit of live music. To go along with the music theme, the course will hold a “skip work” tournament on Thursdays that will feature a live band.

Other notable aspects of the course are an outstanding pro shop that deals exclusively with Nike golf, and one of the friendliest, best-trained staffs in all of Texas. There is even a 5,000-square-foot deck ideal for parties and weddings, and a huge swimming pool.

Located just 30 minutes north of San Antonio on Highway 281, The Hawk Golf Club is truly a diamond in the rough.
