Up Front, All-Inclusive - The Golf Club at Star Ranch

Up Front, All-Inclusive - The Golf Club at Star RanchAccessibility, difficulty and time are among the factors limiting golf’s growth potential. Another barrier that’s almost always associated with keeping the number of core golfers, defined by the National Golf Foundation as a golfer who plays at least eight annual rounds, down is cost.

Tack on ancillary expenses such as meals and range balls to the price paid up front for tee times and cart rental, and a day at the golf course can compare to a dinner for two at an upscale restaurant or a trip to a professional sporting event. It all adds up, and figuring out the grand total can often feel like guesswork.

Hutto’s The Golf Club at Star Ranch doesn’t claim to be the cheapest ticket in town, but the club’s signature “All Inclusive” Package is as advertised. For one flat rate, golfers get 18 holes on a championship-caliber course, cart, unlimited range balls and hot breakfast and lunch. The club has also recently re-introduced free space available replays as part of the package.

“We’re advertising a competitive rate, but all in one price,” said Director of Golf Rob Fulford. “That’s something other courses will advertise and market to entice customers, but hidden charges make them more expensive. This is what we’re known for and it keeps us different from other golf courses.”

The Club at Star Ranch is now offering midday “All Inclusive” rates as well as senior rates.

A Four-Star Facility

Opened in 2001, The Golf Club at Star Ranch was designed by the team of Carter Morrish, Ray Bechtol and Randy Russell. Pushed by the popularity of its value-driven golf packages and a well-groomed links-inspired layout, Star Ranch has become one of the most popular public-access courses in the Austin area and was awarded a 4-Star rating by Golf Digest.

Compared to a number of area courses, trees have a very nominal impact on a round at Star Ranch. The lack of homes within the boundaries of the golf course also contributes to the non-intrusive feeling that prevails here. Featuring wide-open fairways and smooth rolling greens, the 7,017-yard layout has rightly earned the reputation as a player-friendly design.

But don’t confuse player-friendly with pushover. Rolling terrain marked by significant mounding creates a formidable challenge on some holes, while water can impact play on 7 of 18 holes. And with limited tree coverage, players are vulnerable to whatever winds blow through the region. The greens have decent amounts of undulation, but they roll true, making putting a pleasure.

“If you’re looking for the best value in Austin golf, look no further than Star Ranch,” wrote a player who recently teed it up at Star Ranch. “The golf course is always in pristine condition and the staff is the friendliest in Austin. Every time I play there, the experience is second to none.”

“This is a nice golf course,” wrote another golfer. “Great practice facilities, nice layout and great greens. And it’s the best condition of any public course in town.”

In order to improve the existing on-course product, The Club at Star Ranch is in the process of a completing a project to renovate all greenside bunkers. New sand will be added and drainage systems will be updated. In 2007, the club unveiled a brand new practice facility featuring a grass driving range, short game area with chipping greens, practice bunkers and putting green.
