Austin's River Place Country Club hosts famed Marius short game school

AUSTIN, Texas – World-renown short-game instructor Marius Filmalter and his pupil and fellow teacher Chris de Keratry will conduct a highly anticipated putting and short-game school Sept. 17-18 at River Place Country Club in Austin.

Filmalter, lauded as 2009 Golf Magazine Innovator of the Year, is the short-game instructor to many PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour golfers, including Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Mike Weir, Chad Campbell, YE Yang, Ryan Palmer and Trevor Immelman. Filmalter is an inventor of the SAM PuttLab and the TOMI putting system, which scientifically captures the most important parameters of a putting stroke.

“Marius is the top putting instructor on the planet, and this is an unbelievable opportunity for Austin area golfers to learn from the best,” said de Keratry, River Place CC’s head golf professional and a certified Marius instructor, one of only eight in the nation. “During and after this school River Place CC is the only place south of Dallas to learn this system.”

Filmalter has devoted the past 20 years to studying and researching the performance of golfers, in particular the fine motor skill movements utilized in the putting motion. He has measured and analyzed more than 700 professionals and countless amateurs to establish the criteria for a successful putting stroke. Filmalter – who is based in Dallas – has a growing following and is currently contributing monthly instructional articles for Golf magazine.

Filmalter’s teachings are not based on theories. Instead, he and his instructors apply a scientific yet practical approach. “I stress the principals and fundamentals of the short game, and the ability to score,” Filmalter said. “These principals are proven skills that are successfully implemented by PGA tour players on a daily and weekly basis.”

Robert DuCharme, two-time men’s club champion at River Place Country Club, is sold on Filmalter and his methods.

“I have taken Marius’s putting and short game clinic and I think he is a genius,” DuCharme said. “While I was not a bad putter or chipper, I felt like I could get better. That is an understatement – my handicap has plummeted from a 1 to a plus-3. Marius’s techniques and drills make it easy to really ingrain the feeling necessary to be a great putter and chipper.”

The two-day Marius Golf Schools on Sept 17-18 at River Place CC will be separated into three, three-hour classes each day. Each day will have a putting session and a wedge/chipping/short game session. The final session of the day will be a playing lesson on the course. Students may sign up for one, two or all three sessions.

Putting clinics will include stroke analysis on the TOMI Putting Machine and wedge sessions contain instruction on chipping, pitching and bunker play. Lunch is included for those attending both putting and wedge sessions. Participants that sign up for all three sessions will receive the Marius Golf DVD package as part of their registration fee.

Cost for one session is $269; two sessions is $439 and all three sessions are available at $639; the more sessions signed up for, the better the value. Members of clubs belonging to The Dominion Golf Group – the Austin-based company that owns and operates River Place Country Club and four other clubs in Texas – will receive a discount for each session.

Classes are limited in size and are filling quickly, so don’t delay. To register or for more information, contact de Keratry at chrisd@riverplaceclub.com or 512-346-6784.
