Cooper, Runge top STPGA senior competitions

There were winners aplenty at the 2011 STPGA Senior Professional Championship, played at BraeBurn Country Club.

Carl Cooper, golf instructor at Humble Oil Patch Golf Center in Humble, took the big prize, winning the championship with a score of 8-under-par 70-66—136 that included a closing six-hole stretch that included birdies on BraeBurn’s 13th and 15th holes and an eagle on the final hole.

The tournament also served as the Section’s qualifying event for the 2011 Southworth Senior PGA Professional Championship, which will take place Oct. 6-9 at the Club at Creighton Farms and River Creek Golf Club in Virginia.

With Cooper not entered in the qualifying event, Louie Runge, a PGA of America Life Member from Austin, posted a score of 70-70—140 to take the top qualifying spot. He’ll be joined in the national championship by fellow qualifiers Gordon Johnson (70-71—141), head golf professional at Houston Country Club, Carl Baker (72-70—142), a PGA of America Life Member from Sugar Land, David Lundstrom (75-69—144), a PGA of America Life Member from Houston, Steve Parker (72-72—144), PGA of America Life Member from Houston, Troy Schleicher (72-73—145), a golf instructor at Matt Swanson School of Golf, Chuck Cook (75-71—146) of Chuck Cook Golf Academy in Austin, and Ken McDonald (71-75—146), head golf professional at Houston’s BraeBurn Country Club.

Cook and McDonald won the last qualifying spots in a playoff. Alternate qualifiers (in order) are Billy Sitton (74-72—146), Jim Dickson (73-73—146) and Jeff Strong 78-69—147).

STPGA members who are exempt into the national tournament are Robert Thompson (winner of last year’s PGA Senior Professional Championship), a golf instructor at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, and Tim Thelen (a two-time winner of the PGA Professional Championship and now eligible for the senior tournament), an assistant professional at The Traditions at Texas A&M in Bryan.

Cooper won $300 for his overall victory in the STPGA Senior Professional Championship and another $800 for winning the competition’s 50-59 age group. Runge was the runner-up in that group and won $600; Gordon Johnson won $400 for his third-place finish in that group.

Lundstrom won the 60-69 Division and earned $550. Chuck Cook took second place and $400 in winings; Marty Fleckman (73-75—148), director of instruction at Blackhores Golf Club in Cypress, and Charlie Epps (72-76—148), director of instruction at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, tied for third place and won $187.50 each.

Corpus Christi’s Alvin Odom, a PGA of America Life Member, topped the 70-and-Over Division with a score of 84-85—169 and took home $400.
