Course Review: Plum Creek Golf Course

Plum Creek Golf Course was built in 1999. Since it’s inception it has become one of the premier traditional links style golf courses in Central Texas. Located in Kyle, just outside of Austin, Plum Creek offers golfers of all skill levels a true test f golf. It has four sets of tees varying in length between 7,200 and 6,000 yards. The par-72 18-hole layout offers golfers the chance to play golf the old fashioned way. Each hole presents the golfer with multiple shot selections to get the ball in the hole. In addition the layout’s relatively flat nature gives the golfer a new experience each time they play based on the wind conditions.

A true nature lovers course, each hole is lined with a variety of native grasses and Texas wildflowers. Plum Creek sits on more than150 acres of ranch land and is still one of the only courses with very few houses surrounding the course. This is the perfect fit for someone attempting to get away from commercialized golf development.

The best example of this is the signature hole #14. This par-4 measures 382 yards from the back tees and it offers golfers the perfect example of risk/reward. The course’s namesake, Plum Creek, runs left of the fairway and in front of the green. On the right is a large lake. Golfers must choose how far to hit their ball over the lake without going through the fairway into the creek. The more the golfer cuts the corner the easier the approach will be to the treacherous green. According to Head Professional Joe Gerik, the best approach is to hit a 225-yard tee shot, which will leave you a short iron into the green.

The course also features an executive par-3 course to help golfers of all skill levels learn and develop their game. Kids under the age of 12 are free on this course which is just one of the ways Plum Creek promotes family golf. The course also has a large driving range with more than 50 available hitting stations and two putting greens and a chipping green.

According to General Manager/Director of Golf Beau Edge, Plum Creek is a beautiful look at Central Texas wildlife without the infringements of modern day housing. Each day is completely different depending on the prevailing wind. The course offers players the opportunity to play a variety of different shots during the round. To score well at Plum Creek, a golfer must manipulate the ball according to what the wind is willing to give them.
