Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course

Just west of downtown Fredericksburg, TX is the site of one of my favorite golf courses. Carved out of the rolling hills, streams, and oak forests, the setting is stunning. The carefully crafted fairways and greens offer a challenge to all levels of players, and you can pick the tee box from which you’d like to play from any of the four available.

The course plays 6,500 yards from the tips, while higher handicappers can select from tee markers which will give them a course of 6,100, 5,700, or 5,100 yards in length. The 2 par 5’s on the front nine, numbers three and five, are personal favorites. On number three you get to hit your tee shot up and (hopefully) over a cliff and a creek.

Once you’re on top of the cliff, you’re presented with a second shot that you must position carefully if you want any chance of parring the hole. Number five sets you up with a wide open fairway for your tee shot, and then offers you a real challenge in both distance and location for your second. Even if you hit a good tee shot and a good second, chances are you’ll still not be able to see the flag, since the green sits down below that cliff you just navigated on hole number three! So you can’t see the surface of the green, and the green, though rather flat, drops off, steeply, on all sides. If you don’t get the distance right, chances are you’ll get to add a fairly large number to your scorecard. On the back 9, the 478 yard par 5 number 10 will challenge you, particularly if the prevailing south wind is prevailing at 15 to 25 miles an hour; and the 450 yard, par 4 18th is uphill all the way, and places a premium on accuracy, since tall trees line the narrow fairway.

Lady Bird is a municipal course, impeccably maintained by Brian Roeder and his team. There is a huge driving range and two practice putting greens available for you to warm up before you begin you assault on the course. Shelly Ross, the head golf professional, is on call to assist you with your golfing needs. The pro shop is fully stocked with any items you may require, and the personnel in the shop are always glad to see you. If you want to get a bite to eat before your round, after it, or at the turn, the Red Bird Grille provides excellent fare.

All in all, it’s a great golf package, and I urge you to put Lady Bird on your list of “must do” courses. Call the pro shop for a tee time: 1-830-997-4010, and get on out and “do the Bird.”
