NTPGA Wins 2010 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches

The 2010 Joe Black Cup matchesWhen it comes to predicting a winner of the annual Texas Joe Black Cup Matches, the safe money is always on the home team — the visitor has won the matches only seven times in the 30-year history of the tournament, and the 2010 matches followed the trend.

The Northern Texas PGA hosted the 2010 competition at Four Seasons Resort & Club in Las Colinas and its team won the tournament by a 13-11 margin.

Things looked bright for the Southern Texas PGA team, led by Captain Gordon Johnson, through the end of the opening four-ball matches. The STPGA won four of those six contests to take an early 4-2 lead, and, as defending champion, needed a total of 12 points to retain the Cup.

With six foursome matches and 12 singles matches left in the competition, the NTPGA needed to capture 12.5 points to wrest the Cup from the southerners.

The NTPGA team went to work in the six foursome matches, winning four of them to bring the matches even at 6-6 at the close of the first day’s action.

When play resumed on the second day, Mother Nature intervened. When heavy weather moved in and forced a 3-hour rain delay, only three singles matches had been completed; both sides had won one and the other was halved. The matches were tied at 7.5 points for each team and it was still anyone’s tournament.

When the teams returned to the course, however, the golf skies fell on the STPGA and the Northern Texas team. Of the nine matches completed after the rain delay, the NTPGA won five and halved another, and the trophy had moved to the north for the next year.

With this year’s victory, the Northern Texas PGA holds a 15-14-1 over the STPGA.

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is a Ryder Cup-style event pitting teams of a dozen Southern Texas PGA Professionals against a dozen professionals from the Northern Texas PGA. Both teams consist of nine professionals that played their ways onto the team via year-long points competitions, the respective Section presidents, a senior representative and a Captain’s Pick.

Established in 1981, the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches were created to honor Joe Black, a native of Snyder, Texas, who was then completing his first term as President of the PGA of America.

The Southern Texas PGA will host the 31st Texas Joe Black Cup Matches at The Clubs at Cordillera Ranch in Boerne on Nov. 7-8, 2011.
