Southern Texas PGA wins 2011 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches

Start strong and finish stronger — it’s a good plan in whatever you’re facing, and it’s a strategy that worked to perfection for the Southern Texas PGA in the 2011 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in Boerne.

The STPGA’s team of Ken McDonald and Ricky Arnett opened with tournament with a 1 up four-ball victory over the Northern Texas PGA’s Britt Patton and Casey Paulson, and at the completion of the tournament’s six four-ball matches, the STPGA held a 4-2 lead over the NTPGA.

A half-dozen foursome matches followed and the STPGA maintained the pace, with Brad Lardon and McDonald teaming up for a 7&6 win over Patton and Paulson. The NTPGA rallied to win three of the foursome matches, but at the end of the tournament’s first day, the STPGA held a 7-5 lead and needed 5-1/2 points for the 12-1/2 point total that would give the southerners the tournament victory.

However, the NTPGA, as defending champions, needed only 12 points total to maintain control of the Cup, and opened as though they intended nothing less. Northern Texas PGA golfers won three of the 12 singles matches slated on the tournament’s second day and halved the other when the NTPGA’s Craig Pullen chipped in on the final hole of his match with the STPGA’s Wes Skaggs to halve their match.

The STPGA, though, came back to win 6-1/2 points in the last eight matches of the tournament, and when the STPGA’s Tony Johnson closed out the NTPGA’s Casey Paulson 6&5 in the 11th match on the schedule, he locked down the required point total and the STPGA had won. The final total read Southern Texas PGA 14, Northern Texas PGA 10.

“It ended up being a perfect day,” said STPGA Captain Marc DeWall, speaking both of the outcome and the weather that had blown thrown the morning of the singles matches, forcing a rail delay of several hours.

“What a great experience it was,” he added. “To be chosen by your peers to lead our team in one of the year’s most outstanding tournaments is a true honor. To be part of a winning team makes it even better. It was awesome.”

“We were very proud to host the tournament,” DeWall, the director of golf at Cordillera Ranch, “and to experience all the positive comments about the facility and the course was truly gratifying. I think it was a winner all around— our staff at the Southern Texas PGA did a great job conducting the event and having it at Cordillera just made it extra special.”

With this year’s Southern Texas PGA victory, the Matches are tied, with both Sections having won the event 15 times (plus one tie).

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is a Ryder Cup-style event pitting teams of a dozen Southern Texas PGA Professionals against a dozen professionals from the Northern Texas PGA. Both teams consist of nine professionals that played their ways onto the team via year-long points competitions, the respective Section presidents, a senior representative and a Captain’s Pick.

Established in 1981, the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches were created to honor Joe Black, a native of Snyder, Texas, who was then completing his first term as President of the PGA of America.
