The First Tee Learning Center

A Beautiful Addition to the Landscape of Brackenridge Park

The First Tee Learning Center Fresh on the heels of the renovation of the Japanese Tea Gardens and coinciding with the restoration of historic Brackenridge Golf Course, construction of a new Learning Center for The First Tee will add another jewel to Brackenridge Park in the heart of San Antonio. The existing eyesore of a building at the Polo Field Golf Center, home to The 1st Tee of San Antonio, will finally be leveled and replaced with a 6,000-square-foot building whose design borrows liberally from the architectural beauty that already exists in the park.

The first step to reinvigorate this area of Brackenridge Park will take place in May with the renovation of the Taylor House, a quaint one-room building that served as an art studio dating back to the 1940s. The Taylor House will be the temporary home of The First Tee and Polo Field Driving Range operation while the Learning Center is under construction. Following the renovation of Taylor House, the existing building will be leveled and construction will commence on the Learning Center.

The new facility will boast plenty of classroom space where children in the program will learn The First Tee life skills curriculum. A computer lab will also offer a comfortable setting for children to do the life skills curriculum online as well as their regular school work. For the general public who frequent the Polo Field driving range, there will be a new spacious retail shop so that golfers can shop for the latest styles and golf equipment before or after using the highquality, well-maintained practice facility.

This new home for The First Tee enhances an area of San Antonio that plays host to tourists and citizens who frequent the park, the golf course, the zoo and the tea gardens. Brackenridge Park is rich in history and is woven into the fabric of the community. The First Tee Learning Center will add an additional layer of texture to that rich fabric and serve as a welcome place for children of all ages and walks of life.

This new jewel is made possible because of the support of the Valero Energy Foundation, the Greehey Family Foundation, Wadsworth Golf Charities, the Kronkosky Foundation, the Hearst Foundation and a commitment from the City of San Antonio. We are grateful for their generosity. Golf San Antonio, which manages The First Tee of San Antonio, is also providing financial support from proceeds of the Valero Texas Open. The projected cost at completion is $2.1 million.

Please come visit us during construction and take advantage of one of the best practice facilities in San Antonio. Just pardon our dust. Proceeds from the driving range and merchandise sold at the Polo Field Golf Center play a major role in ensuring that our participants in The First Tee get to do so at no cost. We strive to keep this program complimentary and when you are a patron to our establishment, the kids benefit!

Polo Field Golf Center, home of The First Tee of San Antonio, is located at 915 E. Mulberry.
