2010 Brother-Brother National Championship

2010 Brother-Brother Championship HILTON HEAD - This spring bands of brothers from every corner of the country will once again set aside sibling rivalries and team up for a chance to claim the 2010 Brother-Brother National Championship at Bluffton’s Old South Golf Links. The 36-hole Better Ball tournament is open to any and all two-man blood brother teams, and features two divisions of play: team low net and loss gross. The event is scheduled for May 13-15.

Part golf tournament and part social gathering, the Brother-Brother event has become a yearly ritual for some brothers since its inception in 1993. For other pairs, it’s served as the common ground to repair estranged relationships.

“It’s reunited brothers who in some situations didn’t really have relationships,” said event creator and local real estate developer David Staley. “A number of people have told me just how special this event has become for them. Before the tournament they just didn’t get together with their brother, but now they see each other every year.”

The event kicks off on Thursday, May 13th with a practice round at Old South followed by a pairings party complete with various golf competitions and an open bar, a customary practice at Brother-Brother functions. The first round is set for Friday, May 14th and is followed by the final round and a celebratory awards banquet on Saturday, May 15th. This year’s awards banquet will be held at the waterfront Spanish Wells clubhouse.

As was the case in years past, anything can be expected at the Brother-Brother, where teams have been known to trade stories and in one instance punches. Favorite pastimes include looking the part in matching knickers and golf shirts, and knocking back a few beers on and off the course.

“If there is one common theme it’s the interpersonal relationships; the stories that have been made and the bonds that have been built as a result of some crazy golf tournament on Hilton Head,” said Staley. “You can’t believe the impact that this little tournament has had on people’s lives.”

A testament to the power of the Brother-Brother, Paul Clark of Charlotte, North Carolina whose brother and playing partner George was buried in his Brother-Brother t-shirt and knickers after losing his bout with cancer, wrote in to convey how the event had impacted his life.

“I hope that every brother who plays in future tournaments truly enjoys playing and having the opportunity to spend time with their brother as much as George and I did,” he wrote. “Life is short, so enjoy it while you can.”
