Private Club Preview

Be it a brand new golf club with modern design, or an older traditional club with a classic golf course design, being part of a private golf club is the right situation for many golfers. Here’s a Golfer’s Guide view of some of the area’s finest private golf clubs, in hopes of helping you to evaluate your golf plans for 2004.

FRENCH CREEK GOLF CLUB – is a brand new golf club in Chester County, Pa., having just opened for play in August. The golf course, designed by noted architect Gil Hanse (Stonewall), is set atop the rolling hills of the French Creek Valley, and is crafted with an eye toward minimizing land disturbance, while blending natural terrain and classic strategy. Besides the championship course, there’s a full service pro shop, practice field and green, and soon, a clubhouse complete with grill room, dining room, locker rooms and a beautiful patio overlooking the golf course. French Creek is rich in inherent beauty and old world allure, a perfect mix for golfers of any level.

RIVERCREST GOLF CLUB & PRESERVE – just off Routes 422 and 29 in Montgomery County, Pa. is nearing completion and will be open for member play in Spring 2004. There are more than 200 members already, who, in just a few weeks, will be able to have use of the driving range and Golf Learning Center. Clubhouse construction will begin soon with completion expected in early 2005. Says club founder Dan Lejeune, “While the golf course is a design masterpiece, the true signature of RiverCrest is, and will always remain, an exhilarating golf experience complemented by the social activities that reflect the varied lifestyles of our members.” Tours are available upon request.

PHILMONT COUNTRY CLUB – on the Northeast Philadelphia/Montgomery County border, has long been one of the most prestigious private clubs in the region. One of only four private clubs with 36 holes (Merion, Wilmington, Phila. Cricket), Philmont can boast of its classic William Flynn-designed North course and the sporty and testing South course, designed by Willie Park, Jr. Philmont also has one of the area’s best practice facilities, three indoor and eight outdoor tennis courts and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Combine that with great food, as good as any top restaurant, and a beautiful clubhouse, perfect for any outing or wedding, and you’ll find that Philmont Country Club provides the perfect private club package.

ASHBOURNE COUNTRY CLUB – just north of the city limits in Cheltenham, Pa. is another classic golf club and course, established in 1922. I picked up my first club at Ashbourne and learned the game there, on a course that makes you hit every club in the bag. The course is just as good today, better in fact, thanks to improvements to greens, tees, bunkers and fairways. Excellent food was always an Ashbourne tradition, and it is the same today, with members and non-members choosing the club for their weddings, banquets and outings. With a diverse membership, relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and modest cost, Ashbourne is a great choice as your private club.

LULU COUNTRY CLUB – is another classic traditional Montgomery County Golf Club, founded in 1912, and proud of its beautiful and challenging Donald Ross-designed golf course. Now under way, noted architect Ron Forse is working with LuLu on a Ross restoration of its bunkers, tees and greens, assuring that the course will maintain Ross’s original intent and making the course more challenging and enjoyable for its members. LuLu’s clubhouse and facilities remain modern and responsive to their members needs. LuLu’s professional staff is committed to making your private club experience more enjoyable, from the practice range, to the course, to the dining room and grille room.
