GAP Players of the Year

While the area’s top senior golfers continue their tournament season through the fall, the top players in the mid am and junior categories of the Golf Association of Philadelphia have been finalized. For the 3rd time in the last 4 years, 17 year old Robert Galbreath, Jr. of Philmont CC has won GAP Junior Player of the Year honors. Again in decisive form, Robbie dominated the local events, while improving his play in both state and national events. He won his 4th GAP junior title, breaking a record that stood for over 90 years. He barely missed winning his second consecutive state junior title, and finished 2nd at the PA Open, beating all but one of the top 60 pros and 60 amateurs in the field. Most impressive was his play in the USGA Juniors at Shoal Creek, where he finished in the top 16 in the nation.

In GAP’s Mid Am division, it was no surprise as Merion’s Michael McDermott won his 4th Player of the Year crown since 2000, thanks to his wins at the GAP Mid Am and the GAP Amateur. He also finished 2nd in the Silver Cross behind Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley, who also won the GAP Patterson Cup, qualified for the US Mid Am and was 2nd to McDermott in POTY points. Congrats also go to the top players at Tavistock Country Club, as their team won both the GAP spring team match event and the summer’s Team Championship.
