State of the Game

It’s been somewhat of a tough year for the local golf market, with high gas prices and a slower economy generally hurting business. As of Labor Day, there is news that several courses may be closing, others may be sold. Here’s what I know as of now.

One of the region’s best courses, the Beechtree Golf Club in Aberdeen Maryland, will be closing on December 7th. This Tom Doak design (Bandon Dunes) is less than 10 years old, but is considered one of the best layouts in the region. The course will be turned into a high end housing development.

It recently came to my attention that Mays Landing Golf Club in New Jersey is up for sale, meaning that the Fraser family is getting out of the local golf business. The Frasers owned Atlantic City CC before selling it to Harrah’s Casino many years ago. The family will focus their attention on their course in Florida. Also in New Jersey, Running Deer GC has been on the block for most of the year, no buyers so far. Rumor has it that Ron Jaworski is considering adding it to his portfolio that presently includes Valleybrook GC and Edgewood in the Pines.

There may be more closings before year end, as I heard of possibilities from central PA to the Jersey shore. If you’re interested in getting into the golf course business, this may be the time to buy low, and later sell high.
