Tiger Like

Michael McDermott Question? Who is 32 years old and holds all four of golf’s majors at the same time? If you said Tiger Woods, you would be wrong. Tiger did hold all four majors in 2001, after winning the 2000 US Open, British Open and PGA, followed by the 2001 Masters. The correct answer is Merion Golf Club’s Michael McDermott, holder of all 4 of the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s major championships.

Last month, Mike won his very first GAP Amateur Championship, and combined with Mike’s wins at the 2007 GAP Patterson Cup, the ’07 Silver Cross and this spring’s GAP Mid Amateur, Mike has now won the “Tiger” grand slam of local golf. Also like Tiger, Mike has been married for 2 years and recently became a father for the first time. Mike’s goals for the remainder of the year include playing in the USGA Amateur and Mid Amateur championships as well as defending his Patterson Cup and Silver Cross titles. Like Tiger, don’t bet against him!

Robert Galbreath, Jr. Another Tiger-like performance came from another young golfer you’ve read about in Golfer’s Guide over the past 5 years. He’s Robert Galbreath, Jr., the 17 year old senior-to-be from Lower Moreland High School and Philmont Country Club.

Like Tiger, Rob has been a golf prodigy since he first picked up a club at age 4, breaking 50 for nine holes at age 7, breaking 80 for 18 holes at age 9 and making a hole in one at age 10. Last month, Rob set a record that will probably never be broken, winning the GAP Junior Championship for the 4th time, surpassing a record that stood for over 90 years. His match play record in the GAP junior is 16-1. Rob’s goals for the rest of the year will be defending his PA Junior title, qualifying for the USGA Junior and giving Mike McDermott a run for his money at the Patterson Cup. Like Tiger, don’t bet against him!
