Casey Martin to Play in Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open announced that former PGA TOUR professional and 2012 US Open qualifier, Casey Martin, has been awarded a sponsor exemption to compete in the 2012 tournament in Las Vegas, Oct. 4-7.

“We are proud to award a sponsor exemption to Casey Martin, a man who has displayed fierce courage and perseverance on and off the course in his career,” said Raoul Frevel, chairman of the Shriners Hospitals for Children golf committee. “At Shriners Hospitals for Children, we are committed to providing the chance to achieve your dreams, and granting an exemption for a man of Casey’s character embodies this mission.”

A former teammate of Tiger Woods at Stanford University, Martin was a member of the university’s NCAA Championship team in 1994 and a two-time All-American. He turned professional in 1995 and as a member of the Nike Tour, currently known as the Tour, received his first professional win at the Lakeland Classic in 1998. Martin earned his PGA TOUR card in 2000 and recorded five top-50 finishes.

“The opportunity to compete in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an incredible honor,” said Casey Martin. “With the exceptional care provided by the hospitals for families regardless of their ability to pay, I am excited to be involved and support a great cause.”

Martin currently serves as the head coach for men’s golf at the University of Oregon where he has led the team to four NCAA Championship appearances in the last five years. In June 2012, he qualified for the US Open in San Francisco where he narrowly missed the cut by one stroke.
