Watson excited about Ryder Cup opportunity

The United States has a new Ryder Cup team captain. Actually, the PGA of America tapped the shoulder of an old one.

On Thursday morning, the organization announced Tom Watson has been named the U.S. Captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

"We've got the right guy to lead our team," PGA of America president Ted Bishop said.

Watson has some work to do.

The Americans have lost seven of the last nine Ryder Cups and have not won on foreign soil since 1993, when Watson was the captain in England. Team U.S. is coming off a staggering loss this year at Medinah Country Club, where Europe strung together a remarkable rally from a 10-6 deficit going into the final day to win by one point.

Watson, an eight-time major champion at the age of 65, will be the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history. Sam Snead was 57 when he was captain in 1969. The oldest European captain was John Jacobs, 56, in 1981.

Watson has not been back to the Ryder Cup since his 1993 victory at is excited about the opportunity.

"I was waiting for about 20 years to get the call," Watson said. "I loved it the first time. I'm a great fan of the Ryder Cup. It's a great honor to be able to do it again."
