Don't Wake Me, I Plan on Sleeping In

Jim Furyk deserves some credit for giving it the old college try after waking up at 7:23 a.m. in what I assume was one of the more panicked "Oh Sh!t" moments of his professional golf career.

The fifth-ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings and No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings was late to his 7:30 a.m. Pro-Am tee time Wednesday morning at Ridgewood Country Club (site of this week's The Barclays Playoff event), and in accordance with a PGA Tour policy established in 2004, he was disqualified from the tournament.

But he did manage to put himself together, with the exception of a belt or socks, and make it from his hotel to the golf course in 12 minutes. That's a pretty impressive feat in itself.

"I'm kicking myself," Furyk told the Associated Press. "I have a way of climbing into situations that are all my fault."

Furyk blamed a cell phone power outage for the late arrival. Instead of being viewed as another incident where the antiquated rules of golf ruined another perfectly good day, this should be viewed as a sign that professional golfers make far too much money.

Honestly Mr. Furyk, you enter this year's FedEx Cup Playoffs with a real shot to win and collect the $10 million bonus prize that goes with it, and you can't even bother to arrange for a wake-up call at the presumably posh hotel you're sleeping at? That's quite a nonchalant attitude with such coin up for grabs. Who needs more fuel for that private jet anyway?

If I had to speculate, I'd guess Furyk was up watching the Phillies-Astros game, which was won by Houston in 16 innings . He is from West Chester, PA., and the Fightin' Phils are surging toward another postseason appearance. Catch the fever.

For all the fuss, Furyk is still headed to Boston next weekend to compete in the second stage of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
