South Korea's Ji Young Oh didn't do anything spectacular at the 2009 Sybase Classic, but a great exhibition of golf can often make the game appear rather ordinary.
Using a simple formula of fairways and greens, mixed with a number of crucial sand saves and delicate greenside chip shots when the situation called for them, Oh pulled away from a top-tier field to capture her second career LPGA Tour victory by four shots over Norway's Suzann Pettersen.
"This tournament, I played with a lot of great players," Oh said. "From the first day when I made a hole-in-one, I knew that the trophy was waiting for me and I needed to do everything in my power to win this tournament. I really wanted it badly, and there was no way I wasn't going to get it."
"She put herself in position, makes very few mistakes and putts it great," said Pettersen. "She has a great short game. She had some great up-and-downs today and that's what you need around here."
Brisk temperatures and a bothersome wind made for very tough playing conditions Sunday at Upper Montclair Country Club, placing an impetus on getting close enough to ensure par but make a serious run at birdie. As she did all week, Oh limited her self-inflicted errors and put pressure on those around her.
Pettersen mounted the most serious Sunday charge, erasing what had been a three-shot gap by the time the players walked off the 10th green. But Oh was a par machine the rest of the way, until she finished in style with a birdie on the par-5 18th as her name was being penned onto the winner's check for $300,000.
The crowd gathered around the home hole at Upper Montclair were poised to witness a dramatic finish, but Pettersen missed a short par putt on No. 17, all but clinching the win for Oh.
Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie finished in a tie for third after each shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Brittany Lincicome, who began the day just a shot off the pace, struggled to get anything going during the final round, and had to settle for a tie for sixth after finishing with a 77.
