Pine Valley is a course most will never see, let alone play. If you're in the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, around 1 p.m. just show up and they'll let you in. The course consistently ranked No. 1 in the world by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine will host the 84th annual Crump Cup this weekend. The mid-amateur tournament, which was first held in 1922, honors George Arthur Crump, who founded and oversaw the construction of Pine Valley. The final round, which is traditionally held on the last Sunday in September, is an opportunity that comes only once every 365 days. On the day of the final round, the club opens its doors to the public. You can either watch the tournament or walk the course, although using the time to take in every hole is recommended. This final round is the only day each year on which the public has access to the grounds of the club. Just how exclusive is Pine Valley? Well Tiger Woods has yet to play the course, but he has been invited. It's rumored that Jack Nicklaus showed up at the club during his honeymoon and asked to play. While Nicklaus was granted access to the course, members were horrified because his wife was in the car. Women are only allowed on the grounds after 1 p.m. Sunday. Nicklaus' new bride was reportedly driven around the access roads to catch glimpses of her husband as he played alone. Known for having more world-class golf holes than any other course on the planet, Pine Valley is perhaps the most respected course in existence. Certainly, if there were a Mt. Rushmore of American courses, Pine Valley would be present along with Augusta National, Pebble Beach and Oakmont. How to Get In (Directly From the Club) The Crump Cup is open to the public on Sunday, September 28th. The gates here open at 1 p.m. for the final match. A local youth sports group handles all of the parking and shuttle services for the club. This year, the parking will be at the Clementon Elementary School just off Erial Road. There will be signs as you enter town. They charge $20.00 per car load for parking and the shuttle to and from the club (one charge). No tickets are necessary. The youth association will have a snack stand. We don't allow cameras or cell phones.
