Callaway's FT9 DriverAs inventories of expensive golf equipment pile up like unused fruitcakes at Christmas, major golf retailers and golf equipment manufacturers have come together in Cum baya fashion to move unsold items to the golfing public at discounted rates.

A recent article from CNBC.com said of the industry struggles, "Fewer golfers are playing, and they're spending less money on everything from new clubs to travel. Golf equipment makers, hit with declining sales, have been forced to lower prices."

CNBC.com quoted a sports business anyalyst, who said golf companies have been forced to "become more creative in reaching out to people."

Through Web retailers like Edwin Watts Golf.com, Dick's Sportings Goods.com and GolfDiscount.com, golf companies like Callaway golf are reaching out to their customers , especially those in need of new driver or fairway woods.

For a limited time, Callaway is giving golfers a chance to get either a FT Squareway wood or two X Fairway woods for just $1 with the purchase of a new FT-iQ driver ($499) or FT-9 driver ($399). You also have the option of buying a new Big Bertha Diablo Driver and receiving a Big Bertha Diablo fairway wood for only $1 as well.

Dick's Sporting Goods has a similar special involving the company represented by the world's No. 1 golfer. We're talking about Nike of course, and if you act now you can grab a free Nike SQ Sumo or SQ 2 fairway wood with the purchase of a Nike SQ Sumo 2 5900 Driver , listed at only $199.99.

Edwin Watts Golf has all of the top TaylorMade drivers from last season available at affordable prices. On edwinwattsgolf.com, you can find the TaylorMade Tour Burner driver for $169.99, the TaylorMade R7 Limited Driver for $199.99, the TaylorMade Burner Driver for $199.99 and the TaylorMade Tour Burner TP Driver for $299.99.

At GolfDiscount.com , you can find three terrific drivers for just $149.99. Choose from either the Cleveland HiBore XLS , the Nike Sumo 5000 or the TaylorMade Burner Draw .

Nike Sumo 2 5900 DriverGolfDiscount.com is also giving away a free Cleveland E9 stand bag with the purchase of Cleveland Launcher combo irons. There is also a deal involving Callaway irons; buy an 8 iron set of 2009 X Forged irons and receive a free X Forged wedge.

FootJoy is also getting in on the action, spreading the savings to your feet. From now until May 2nd, FootJoy is giving customers $20 the purchase of any style of DryJoys to celebrate 20 years of its most popular shoe.

In addition to everything I just mentioned, there are plenty of deals out there on equipment, apparell and accessories. Just search the Web and prepare to save.

While you're waiting for the economy to rebound, stock up on some great golf equipment at less than half of the typical cost.
