A Soul Awakening Experience Awaits at Newport Dunes

Print E-mail
Written by Brandon Underwood Online Editor

Newport Dunes Golf ClubEven as he approaches 80, Arnold Palmer retains a youthful vigor and passion for the game of golf that you’d expect to find in a man just beginning his journey as a touring professional.

So it makes you wonder how phenomenal a golf venue must be in order to further awaken an old soul like Palmer’s and create a renewed enthusiasm within a living legend for a game he’s built his life around; a game that’s been the beneficiary of his greatness, undeniable charm and grace under fire.

“Being here and seeing this course has aroused some enthusiasm in me I hadn’t felt for a while,” said Palmer of one of his newest Signature golf courses, Newport Dunes in Port Aransas. “I can’t tell you that I’ve enjoyed playing any golf course any more than I did this one. This is a fantastic setting."

The 6,821-yard par-71 Palmer design has introduced world-class golf to the cozy oceanside community referred to as “Port A” by the locals. Newport Dunes is the centerpiece of a master-planned community, destined to be a private-resort course, but currently open for public play as the layout approaches its one-year anniversary set for September.

Newport Dunes Golf ClubThere is no timetable for when the course will convert to a more exclusive setup, but the opportunity for everyone to play this beautiful layout will only last for a limited time, so those in the area are encouraged to take advantage in the coming months.

Located in historic Mustang Island on an 1,800-acre sprawling expanse of untamed earth bordered to the east by the Gulf of Mexico and to the east by the Galveston Bay, Newport Dunes is “very unique; a combination of Southern Texas hospitality and Scottish Links golf,” according to General Manager Kevin Michael.

“Golfers don’t have to travel to Bandon Dunes or Kiawah Island to experience great links-style golf,” Michael said. “We have it right here in our own backyard in Texas.”

A seaside setting you won’t find anywhere else in Texas, Newport Dunes was inspired by the great courses in Scotland and Ireland and represents the very first oceanfront design created by Palmer in North America.

From tee to green, golfers will be embraced by an exhilarating ocean breeze, challenged by rolling terrain littered with landmarks consistent with links-style golf such as vibrant native grasses swaying in harmony with the sea, imposing greens, stacked wall bunkers and deceptive landing areas, and treated to tremendous panoramic views of both the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay.

As a destination, this sleepy little village is also entering a new era, as tourists descend upon Port A to partake in the enticing combination of fishing and championship golf.

Newport Dunes Golf Club “What an awesome guys weekend,” said Michael.

Exceptional service nicely compliments breathtaking scenery at Newport Dunes, as the golf staff strives to deliver a unique experience for every golfer that includes mango-scented golf towels, curb-side bag drop service and personalized interaction.

On its Web site, the club offers a variety of “Stay and Play” packages of varying length and price capable of suiting any golf group’s needs. Traveling golfers can choose from a selection of condos, townhomes and beach houses, and add additional nights and rounds of golf to build the perfect golf trip. All lodging partners are located less than 10 minutes from the golf course. Each golf package includes greens fees, golf car, practice facility usage and unlimited golf, which is subject to availability.

Visit www.newportdunesgolf.com today or call (361) 749-4653 to discover what is already being hailed as one of the world’s best new links-style layouts.
