Harrington Voted PGA Tour Player of the Year

The pride of Ireland, Padraig Harrington, has been named PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2008, ending Tiger Woods' three-year stranglehold on the award.

Harrington becomes the first European player to claim the honor since its inception nearly two decades ago.

Harrington also became the first European to win back-to-back major championships (PGA Championship, Open Championship) in the same year, a feat only matched by Woods in the last 20 years.

Harrington captured the Open Championship while battling Greg Norman down the stretch in the final round at Royal Birkdale, and vanquished all comers a month later at the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills despite admitting to be off his game for a portion of the event.

A day earlier, the Golf Writers Association of America picked Harrington as their player of the year. The 37-year-old Irishman received 184 votes to 58 for Woods and five for Vijay Singh, who won the FedEx Cup.

Harrington was also named the 2008 European Tour Player of the Year.
