Vancouver Golf Course to Host 2011 RBC Canadian Open

The PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open is headed back to Western Canada in 2011.

Thursday April 16, officials at the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) and RBC confirmed that the historic Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, which last hosted the event in 2005, will host the tournanament again in two years time.

Canada's only PGA Tour event will be held in conjunction with Shaughnessy's 100th anniversary celebration in 2011. The course has been praised by PGA Tour players who experienced it in 2005.

"I think overall the golf course probably has been recognized as one of the best, if not the best, in Canada for playing the Canadian Open," Canada's Stephen Ames told the Canadian Press. "I just hope that in the future we get to play on golf courses like this more often."

RCGA Executive Director and CEO Scott Simmons said he is thrilled that Open is returning to Shaughnessy.

"The quality of the golf course is of utmost importance to PGA Tour playes and the response to Shaughnessy from players in 2005 was overwhelmingly positive. The is among the premier venues in all of Canada and we are delighted that the membership has agreed to host the championship in 2011."

The 2005 Canadian Open at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club was won by PGA Tour veteran Mark Calcavecchia who shot 5-under 275 to outlast Ryan Moore and Ben Crane by a single stroke. The 2005 event marked the return of Canada's national Open championship to Western Canada for the first time in nearly 40 years dating back to Don Massengale's victory at Shaughnessy in 1966. The club also played host to C.W. Congdon's Canadian Open victory in 1948.

"Shaughnessy is the type of old-style traditional golf course that players on Tour absolutely love to play," said Calcavecchia. "I remember back in 2005, the players couldn't say enough about how great the golf course was and a lot of us have wondered when the event might get back out there. I think the players would agree that it's going to be one of the best golf courses we play in 2011."

This year's Canadian Open, which will mark the 100th playing of the event, will be held for the 25th time at Glen Abbey. In 2010, it moves to St. George's, a private club in Toronto.

In 2008, Chez Reavie took home top prize in the event.
