2009 CA ChampionshipCommitments for the World Golf Championships-CA Championship were finalized on Friday with the world’s best players competing for the CA Championship title over 72 holes of stroke play, March 10-15, at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott Resort.

Those committed to the event include all 50 from the Official World Golf Ranking released on March 2, 2009, including No. 1 ranked Tiger Woods, defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Phil Mickelson, 19-year-old Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and local favorite Camilo Villegas.

All 77 players who qualified for the event have committed to play this year. Other qualification categories in addition to the top 50 in the world include the top 30 from the final 2008 FedExCup standings, the top 20 from the 2008 European Tour Order of Merit, the top three from the final 2008 standings from the Japan Tour, Asian Tour, Australasian Tour and Sunshine Tour as well the top 10 in the current 2009 FedExCup Standings and the Race to Dubai Standings.

Despite being out of the game for more than eight months, Woods retained his spot atop the Official World Golf Ranking. He will make the CA Championship his second tournament since knee surgery following his victory at the U.S. Open last June. Woods made his return to golf at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, but the CA Championship will be his first stroke-play event of the year. Woods is looking for his seventh victory at an event he has won six times at six different courses. In total, Woods has won 15 official World Golf Championships events in his career.

“Tiger returning to the CA Championship for his first stroke-play event since getting injured is absolutely huge for the South Florida community” said Eddie Carbone, executive director of the CA Championship “With guys like Tiger, Phil, Camilo and Sergio challenging defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, this edition of the CA Championship is setting up to be quite the showdown.”

Any player who moves into the top 50 of the World Ranking, top 10 of the FedExCup point standings or top 10 of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai standings after this week’s Honda Classic will also punch a last-minute ticket to Doral.

Each year, the World Golf Championships series brings together the best players from across the globe to play against each other. There are currently 77 players qualified for this year’s CA Championship, representing 20 countries.

Tickets are still available for this year’s championship and can be purchased online at WGCCA.com or by calling 866-4WGC-TIX.
