The 64th Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament is set for Sat. April 17 and Sun. April 18 at the nationally-recognized Pasatiempo Golf Club. Hosted by San Jose State University Spartans Men's Golf, 12 respected collegiate teams are set to compete in a 54-hole event, on the famed MacKenzie-designed course in Santa Cruz, Calif. (located between San Jose, Calif. and the Monterey Peninsula).
On Fri. April 16, collegiate players will enjoy a practice round with other amateur golfers in the annual "WI" College-Am. Business and community leaders, alumni and other loyal supporters of college golf are looking forward to experiencing the historic Pasatiempo tract alongside standout collegiate players from foremost colleges and universities.
Joining San Jose State at the Western Intercollegiate are two teams ranked in the Top 10, UCLA (No. 4) and Oregon (No. 6), and Oregon State in the Top 25 with a No. 24 ranking this week (according to GolfStat).
Other teams competing include: Boise State University, UC Irvine, University of Hawaii, University of Idaho, Michigan State University, New Mexico State University, University of the Pacific, and University of Tulsa.
Three of the nation's top five players are expected to participate. Defending champion Diego Velasquez of Oregon State is No. 1 nationally, UC Irvine's John Chin is No. 3 and Oregon's Eugene Wong is NO. 5.
"The Western Intercollegiate is one of the longest running tournaments in college golf and it's played on one of the top courses in the country," shared San Jose State University Men's Golf Coach John Kennaday. "As in years past, we welcome each team and its players as well as their coaches to a premier tournament that's rich in golf history."
The tournament is open to the public and there is no admission charge. Free parking is available at all of the three Pasatiempo lots (clubhouse, 18th green and administrative office).
