Canongate: Pinecrest Introduces Affordable Golf to Hilton Head

Canongate at PinecrestAfter nearly 40 years of experience in the metro Atlanta golf market, Canongate Golf Clubs have finally brought their expertise to Hilton Head with Canongate at Pinecrest, the area’s newest private golf club.

Canongate at Pinecrest, which opene November 22, 2004 is dramatically different from anything that the current Hilton Head golf market offers. Presently, there are three types of golf courses: high-end private, public, and semiprivate.

The high-end private clubs, while beautiful, tend to be unaffordable for the average family. The public courses in Hilton Head are terrific, especially for tourism, but they are often flooded during the peak tourist seasons by the island’s seasonal visitors. Lastly, there are the semiprivate golf clubs that have both local and visiting golfers competing for the priority tee times.

Canongate at Pinecrest adds a new dimension of private golf by bringing to Hilton Head the time-tested Canongate Concept – offering affordable private golf to the average person or family. The initiation fee is $750, drastically lower than those charged by other private golf clubs. Dues for an associate membership are as low as $99 a month. Further sweetening the deal, Canongate at Pinecrest members enjoy full privileges at all the other Canongate courses.

A Canongate Membership includes your spouse and children, and they all enjoy access to the community’s pool, workout, basketball, playground and tennis facilities. Just as importantly, Canongate members will never face assessments because they do not hold equity in the club, therefore they know exactly what they’ll be paying up front.

“This is a great quality membership program for both single and family memberships,” said Kelly Minasi, PGA professional and general manager at Pinecrest. “This is a product that has been desperately needed by the Hilton Head and Bluffton communities for quite some time.”

With such low costs, some assume that the low fees are at the expense of golf course conditions. Not so. Just ask any of the Atlanta members about their Canongate courses. Some of the Canongate courses are so well respected that they are used for U.S. Open qualifier events. At the Canongate clubs, there is nothing lacking in either course maintenance or layout.

World-renowned golf course architect Rocky Roquemore crafted Canongate at Pinecrest, his first South Carolina Lowcountry design. Roquemore is known for co-designing three of the Disney World Golf Courses (the Magnolia Course, the Buena Vista Course, and the Palm Course). He also has been the working golf course architect for Cog Hill in Chicago for the last 26 years. Perhaps most notably, he designed San Lorenzo Golf Club, the number two-rated course in Europe as rated by Golf World Magazine in 1995.

At Canongate, Roquemore has again designed a beautiful and challenging 18-hole championship course. Measuring just over 7,100 yards, Canongate will test the accomplished golfer, but with multiple tee boxes can accommodate the average player as well. Located within a Centex Homes community, Canongate at Pinecrest
artfully weaves throughout the development, while still maintaining a natural landscape that both golfers and homeowners can enjoy. Lagoons already filled with coastal bird life and wilderness areas with local plant life gracefully surround the golf holes. The skillfully laid out bunkers and lagoons will test golfers of all levels.

“This is not your typical members course,” Minasi said. “It’s user friendly to beginners but it will challenge the more seasoned players.” And as Hilton Head resident and new member Bart Bunbell relates, “It’s worth the drive”!

For her part, Minasi brings to Pinecrest a clear understanding of what golfers want from private golf membership, having worked in the Hilton Head golf business since 1988, and most recently at the popular Oyster Reef Golf Club. Already, Minasi has planned an active schedule for Pinecrest members.

The course is located in the Pinecrest subdivision, which is situated just off of Buckwalter Parkway behind the newly constructed Bluffton High School. The Buckwalter area is booming with new homes, and is only minutes from Hilton Head Island on Highway 278.

We often hear that if a deal is too good to be true then it probably is, but in Bluffton, South Carolina, if a deal is too good to be true, it’s Canongate at Pinecrest.
