Play More, Do More, Get More at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront ResortThe anticipatory phrase “Are we there yet” elicits images of the prototypical American family vacation, a summer sojourn that begins and ends with a long day in the car. Sure, the sound of impatient children has in part been quelled thanks to the rise of text messaging, the proliferation of the iPod and the convenience offered by the portable DVD player, but spending hours in cramped quarters hasn’t necessarily become the equivalent of a deep tissue massage.

At Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, those excruciating hours spent on the Interstate uncomfortably stuffed in your automobile could be your last, at least until the end of your vacation.

It’s quick and easy just call 843-689-4222 to schedule a pick-up.

Where that adventure will start and eventually end is up to you, but you’ll need to consider the many possibilities.

Every April, golf scribes who eagerly inherit the task of covering the year’s first major, The Masters, predictably remind us that the event doesn’t really begin until the leaders reach the back nine on Sunday. At Palmetto Dunes, a tour of the resort’s three acclaimed golf courses starts with the back nine on the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront course.

Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course

It’s not unusual for the wind to whip during the afternoon, making the 495-yard par-5 10th hole feel as if it’s a mile away. No matter how many shots it takes you to reach the green, you’ll be treated to one of the signature golf scenes in all of the Lowcountry. Flanked by greenside bunkers and native timber, the 10th hole is one of only two holes on the island with a clear view of the Atlantic.

Overall the oceanfront course is enjoyable and aesthetically pleasing, with wide-open emerald fairways, a number of holes bordering the Palmetto Dunes lagoon system and large greens that make for attackable targets.

Arthur Hills Golf CourseMeasuring only 6,651 yards from the back tees, the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes is the shortest of the three courses, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in substance. Having constructed the majority of his courses on rolling landscapes in Michigan and Ohio, Hills makes use of the natural contours of the land to create potential uneven lies. It will be seldom necessary to employ your power game on this layout, but beware the real test comes from 150 yards and in. At the Hills Course, the challenge is in the approach.

Regarded as the truest championship challenge on the island by many, and respected by all familiar with the ways of the game, the George Fazio Course is a par 70 that proves to be quite a stern test from tee to green.

The level of difficulty isn’t surprising considering the man who molded the course into its eventual look. Fazio competed in seven Masters during his career on Tour and finished third in an 18-hole playoff at the 1950 U.S. Open hosted by Merion Golf Club.

George Fazio Golf CourseFazio’s only Hilton Head project is noted for its difficult par 4’s, including the opening and home holes.

Adding to the uniqueness of its golf experience, the Palmetto Dunes Resort is the only golf facility on Hilton Head Island to offer Coolwell air-conditioned golf carts and state-of-the-art Segway golf transporters.

Palmetto Dunes doesn’t simply cater to its come-and-go golf crowd, the resort warmly welcomes resident golfers to its championship courses.

In 2009, Palmetto Dunes is offering a variety of golf programs to Beaufort County residents; special 18-hole golf rates, preferred access to tee times, a social golf membership based on a set annual fee and an unlimited golf pass perfect for seasonal and part-time residents.

Peddling along the interconnected pathways of Hilton Head has become a favorite family pastime, particularly at Palmetto Dunes.

The resort’s outdoor adventure headquarters, Palmetto Dunes Outfitters, can provide families with a variety of bicycles include bikes for children, mountain bikes, beach cruisers or adult tandem bikes plus kayaks, canoes and kids camps.

If you’re setting out to soak up the sun and experience the warm waters of the Atlantic, Palmetto Dunes Outfitters can provide you with beach chairs, umbrellas and even surf boards.

Paddling through the 11-mile Palmetto Dunes lagoon system, which was originally touted as a modern day Venice, continually proves to be one of the most popular pursuits for resort guests, especially in the warm summer months when the skies over Broad Creek Marina are filled with fireworks every Tuesday night. Kayakers can expect to work up a sweat and witness a fascinating cross-section of wildlife during their journey. Other water-related activities include adventure cruises, catch-and-release fishing and water skiing.

Palmetto Dunes Tennis CenterThe nationally recognized Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center gives the resort one of the most accomplished tennis-golf combinations in the country. Since 1975, Palmetto Dunes has been ranked among “The 50 Greatest U.S. Tennis Resorts” by Tennis Magazine. Overall, the resort is home to 23 clay and two hard courts, eight of which are lighted to suit a variety of schedules. So, whether you’re inspired by watching the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, or one day to aspire to play as well as them, Palmetto Dunes is the place to practice. The resort has a number of instructional programs led by a knowledgeable and energetic staff in addition to first-come, first-serve court access.

Once you’ve completed your physical exertion for the day, it’s time to refuel at one of the resort’s dining establishments, or do some shopping at Shelter Cove.

Resort guests can fend for themselves at nearby grocery store and prepare a meal or opt to venture out to one of the brilliant eateries in the neighborhood of Palmetto Dunes which include a variety of great waterfront dining options like Alexander’s, Bistro 17, Little Venice, Ocean Grille, Parrot Cove Café, San Miguel’s or Scotts Fish Market to name a few.
