The Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort - A Destination Resort for All in the Family

The Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort - A Destination Resort for All in the FamilyWhen you’re one of the two most recognizable golf resorts on Hilton Head Island, simply paying lip service to being world class will not get it done. Rather, it takes a true dedication to providing visitors with the type of vacation experience they will remember for all the right reasons.

Challenges on the links, relaxation on the beaches, recreation on the water, dining and shopping in style, convenient and comfortable accommodations; these are the reasons visitors come to Hilton Head Island or make it their second home. They’re also the reason why so many of those people have made Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort their host of choice for the past four decades plus.

Whether it’s the three acclaimed championship golf courses, the miles of oceanfront beaches and interlocking lagoon systems, on-site accommodations and myriad of other outdoor activities and nearby shopping and dining, Palmetto Dunes is truly dedicated to providing a memorable and affordable Hilton Head Island vacation experience.

Like the very island it calls home, the resort has evolved from one of the original golf destinations on Hilton head to a true vacation experience where just about everything one could want is within the confines of its gates or a mere mile outside them. This evolution has come from a commitment to constantly improving its amenities, services and value packages to ensure visitors to the Greenwood Communities & Resorts property receive that aforementioned world-class experience.

In the past decade alone, the resort has made significant renovations to two of its three golf courses, enhanced amenities to all its facilities, added an impressive collection of villa options to complement its on-site full-service hotels, created new dining options and built true value packages that combine all the wonderful options the resort offers.

The end result is a vacation experience that has never been better, more affordable or more complete than what Palmetto Dunes currently offers golfers and non-golfers alike seeking to enjoy a true Hilton Head Island vacation.

“Today, because the way people are vacationing we wanted to make sure we were providing everything they needed right here at the resort,” said Bret Martin, vice president of resort operations for Palmetto Dunes.

Even with all the resort improvements and the addition of so many activities, it remains the 54 holes of championship golf crafted by three of the finest architects the game has ever known that attracts thousands of visitors to Palmetto Dunes every year. Arthur Hills, Robert Trent Jones and George Fazio each lent their talents – and names – to the three Palmetto Dunes courses, crafting layouts that are equal in their challenge and quality yet completely different in their style and feel.

Both the Hills and Jones courses have been named South Carolina golf courses of the year by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association in the past seven years, including Hills’ distinction in 2009. Those awards are as much a tribute to the quality of the golf courses as to the commitment Palmetto Dunes has always displayed in providing superior conditioning and service at each of its facilities. Rest assured, at this resort the next upgrade in quality will not be the last.

Several years ago, it was the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course that got a multimillion dollar renovation by former Jones pupil Robert Rulewich. This past winter, it was the Fazio course, long-time local favorite, which received some special attention.

In an effort to improve the yearround consistency of its greens and to return them to the original Fazio design, Palmetto Dunes replaced all 18 greens (and the practice green as well) with a completely new surface that can better tolerate low-light, salty soil and high traffic.

The new Diamond Zoysia surface, which replaced Bermudagrass, allows the resort to avoid overseeding the greens twice a year, meaning that conditions in November will be the same as in April and July. The end result is an equally enjoyable experience no matter when the golf is being played or the amount of play the course is receiving.

“It’s about giving our golfers a consistent experience across all 18 holes and on the practice green all year-round,” said Bret Martin, vice president of resort operations for Palmetto Dunes. “We won’t have the transition period in the spring and in the fall that we traditionally had with the Bermudagrass.”

With the new greens, Fazio is certainly a must-play at Palmetto Dunes, but the Robert Trent Jones tract is, to many, the resort headliner. One of only two courses on Hilton Head to offer true oceanfront holes, the Jones course is a visual masterpiece from start to finish.

Well manicured and framed, the layout is the most spacious at Palmetto Dunes but does feature the most water hazards as well. The trip down the par-5 10th to breathtaking ocean views behind the green is among the best golf experience on the East Coast. The view of the ocean continues from the tee on the par-4 11th before the course makes it way back toward the clubhouse and away from the Atlantic.

If you know Arthur Hills, you know what to expect at his Palmetto Dunes course, which he has called among the finest he has ever created. A true shotmakers course, the Hills layout is perhaps the resort’s most difficult but also it’s most enjoyable. In true Hills fashion, the layout offers numerous approach shot options to sloping, guarded greens and enough forced carries and lateral water hazards to make one think, and rethink, almost every shot.

As further demonstration of its commitment to providing a quality experience at all its facilities, the resort recently acquired a new fleet of golf  carts, all equipped with the Coolwell G2 Climate Control System that air conditions the cart during an entire 18-hole round, allowing for a comfortable summer round of golf. Each course also features a limited number of Segway Personal Golf Transporters for those who might want a more upright tour of the course between shots.

The resort also features a terrific golf instruction program headlined by Director of Instruction Doug Weaver. In addition to numerous one-on-one and group instruction programs, Weaver hosts a free clinic for visitors and residents every Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. focusing on different aspects of the game. For those looking to take a golf memory home with them, each course features its own fully-stocked pro shops with merchandise ranging from low to high, including newlines such as Sligo Wear and longtime favorites including Tommy Bahama.

The “Palmetto Dunes Experience” might start with the golf, but it certainly does not end there. The resort features a beautiful 11-mile interconnected lagoon waterway system that is ideal for kayaking, boating and even fishing. For those who desire the courts over the course, there are 25 tennis courts within the resort, including 23 with clay surfaces.

For the sand and surf lovers, the resort features its own private-access beach with beach chairs, umbrellas and even surfboards available from the Outfitters Center on the resort. For those seeking to experience the terrific dining options the island offers, the resort recently opened the Dunes House, which serves lunch and dinner and is open only to guests and residents of the resort.

When all the day’s and evening’s actions are complete, the resort has ensured that its host of villa, home and hotel options are among the finest and most comfortable on the island. The resort features two full service hotels and numerous villa options including two-, three- and four-bedroom varieties. These accommodations are packaged together with great golf, tennis and recreation options, with some amazing deals available that include every amenity the resort offers into one amazing price.

For more information on those package options, visit www.PalmettoDunes.com or call 866 400-7875 and book directly with the resort’s experienced and knowledgeable call center.

Diversity, value and quality are not just buzz words at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort; they are the standards by which the world-class resort operates every day. And trust me, that too is anything but lip service.
