The Sea Pines Resort - A Summer's Worth of Memories in One Family Vacation

The Sea Pines Resort - A Summer's Worth of Memories in One Family VacationWith the rise in junior golf and the growing demand for families to spend portions of the summer together on the links, Hilton Head has emerged as one of the most family-friendly golf excursions on the East Coast, and the island’s most recognizable resort is leading the way toward that distinction.

Home to some of the finest golf courses in the country, including the acclaimed Harbour Town Golf Links, the Sea Pines Resort offers up its 54 holes of golf to families seeking memorable moments and joint challenges every summer. From the creation of junior tees on its recently debuted Heron Point by Pete Dye course to special junior rates and instructional programs throughout the summer months, the resort is a natural choice for families looking to balance fun on the beaches and the water with excitement on the fairways and the greens.

Located on the south end of Hilton Head, the sprawling Sea Pines Resort is best known for Harbour Town, which plays host to the world’s best players each April in the PGA Tour’s Verizon Heritage, but its two other courses –

The Ocean CourseThe Ocean Course and Heron Point – are every bit the complement to the Dye-designed Harbour Town. The three layouts, combined with the private beaches, miles of bike trails, dozens of tennis courts, shopping opportunities and various villa and hotel options, make Sea Pines the one-stop vacation experience that welcomes thousands of families every summer. Now more than ever, it’s among the most affordable family options on the island, making an unforgettable vacation all the more appealing.

For parents looking to experience golf with their children, Sea Pines runs a “children play free with paying adult program” from Memorial Day to Labor Day on all three resort courses. While the program is limited to one child per paying adult, it will go a long way toward making a fun day on the links an affordable one to boot.

Speaking of a fun day on the links, a full set of junior tees make Heron Point the ideal setting for young golfers to gain some confidence on the challenging Sea Pines course. Measuring just more than 3,700 yards, Heron Point’s junior tees allow youngsters to largely experience the same golf course as their parents, but at a gentler test regarding length and forced carries.

It’s not, however, the only course Sea Pines juniors can handle. The legendary Harbour Town track, which will test the full game of even the best adult players, measures only 5,200 yards from the forward or “Palmetto” tees and features few forced carries on the layout. The Ocean Course, one of only two courses on the entire Island that offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, plays to a similar 5,300 yards from the Palmetto tees.

While Sea Pines tops the list of places to play around Hilton Head, it’s also a haven for juniors and adults looking to learn the game or improve upon existing skills. The Golf Academy at Sea Pines Resort, located at the Ocean Course and Heron Point practice facility, offers visitors a wide variety of instructional programs ranging from single-day options to two- and three-day golf schools for players looking to make serious improvements to the their games.

The two-day school includes four hours of instruction with a 5 to1 student/teacher ratio. Golfers receive instruction on the full swing, a frame-by-frame take-home video analysis, a personal improvement manual and lunch daily, all for $695. For the serious golfer, the three-day school offers a 3 to 1 student/teacher ratio and on-course instruction in addition to video analysis, manual and lunch, all for $995.

For those looking for just a slight tune up or some short-game work, the Academy offers single day and private instruction as well. The three-hour half-day school focuses on the full swing, and the Scoring School provides an emphasis on the all-important short game with three hours of instruction on chipping, pitching, sand play and, of course, putting. Both schools feature a 5 to 1 student/teacher ratio, personal improvement manuals and cost $179. Private one-hour instruction with video analysis is also available for $125.

For the young golfers, the Academy offers single day clinics from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The hour-long clinics, which feature a 6 to 1 student/teacher ratio, are appropriate for children of all skill levels and cost $25.

Harbour TownLed by Director of Instruction Skip Malek, a Class A PGA professional and former Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year, and Golf Magazine “Top 100 Instructor in America, ” Head Teaching Professional Rick Berry, you and your game will be in good hands at The Golf Academy at Sea Pines Resort no matter the program you choose. While all the family and instructional programs can fill a vacation of any length, it’s playing the three golf courses that will provide the most memorable experiences at Sea Pines. For anyone that’s watched the Verizon Heritage during the 41 years of its incredible run at Harbour Town, the beauty, charm and challenge of the golf course will not surprise. That said, the true character, creativity and elegance that Dye and player consultant Jack Nicklaus put into Harbour Town can only truly be appreciated first-hand.

Only in person can a golfer truly understand the tight, tree-lined fairways, the postage-stamp greens, the strategic bunkering and use of waste areas and perhaps the most diabolical collection of par 3s seen on any regular PGA Tour stop this side of Augusta National. Truly, Harbour Town is unlike any course played on the tour and entirely unlike any other layout you will experience in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Considering the incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean from the 15th green and 16th tee boxes, the Ocean Course has earned its name, and then some. The first course ever built on Hilton Head, the Ocean Course was completely reconstructed in 1995 by Mark McCumber and the results have held firm the past 14 years.

A classic design, the Ocean Course tests its visitors with strategically-placed bunkers and lagoons throughout the layout. Like Harbour Town, the course puts far larger a premium on accuracy and strategy than power and length, making a true test of golf from tee to green.

Unveiled in September 2007, Heron Point is the second acclaimed Dye production in Sea Pines. Nothing short of a modern masterpiece, Heron Point offers dramatically-angled fairways, shifting elevations and diverse surfaces that range from sand, mulch, limestone and a collection of different grasses that create a golf experience unlike any other in the area.

At slightly more than 7,000 yards from the tips, Heron Point is a strong test of golf, but with five additional sets of tees, including the aforementioned junior set, it can be challenged by all levels of golfers.
