Haig Point announces Rees Jones Invitational

Daufuskie Island, S.C. (Feb. 6, 2008) – Haig Point, one of South Carolina’s most exclusive private clubs, is excited to announce that it will host the inaugural Rees Jones Collegiate Invitational on its Signature Course, September 6 – 8, 2008.

The tournament, which will be hosted annually by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones and Haig Point, will consist of 12 to 15 men’s teams. Eleven universities have already committed to the tournament and include: Michigan State, Connecticut, Jackson State, Eastern Michigan, San Diego State, Toledo, Columbia, Texas-Arlington, Georgia State, Methodist and San Jose State.

The teams will play a practice round on September 6, followed by 36 holes of competition on September 7 with the final 18 holes played on September 8.  The Michigan State University golf team, led by head coach Sam Puryear, will serve as the host school for this year’s tournament. Puryear helped make the tournament possible by partnering with Mark Nordman, Haig Point’s chief operating officer.

“The members and staff at Haig Point are extremely honored to be hosting this special tournament, which we believe will become a celebrated tradition for both the club and college golf,” said Nordman.

Haig Point’s Signature Course, considered by many to be one of the very finest in all of golf, has just undergone a $5.5 million renovation and restoration overseen personally by Rees Jones and his design associate Greg Muirhead. Haig Point has received many accolades, awards and rankings over the years from publications such as Golf Digest, Links, and Golfweek.  The renovated course features perhaps the best collection of par threes anywhere in the world.
