Inokawa Wins Third Consecutive Title Gumm Notches Second Victory in the Girls Division

A highly skilled group of junior golfers competed in the 36-hole International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Border Battle at Callaway Gardens on March 10-11, 2012. For many players this was their first IJGT tournament, and the Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens Resort, which hosted the PGA TOUR's Buick Challenge from 1991-2002, proved quite the test.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Shosei Inokawa of Atamishi, Japan, won his third consecutive IJGT title in dramatic fashion Sunday at the Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens. Inokawa, a Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) student, made a ten foot putt on the last hole to hold off Mark Folkwein (HHIJGA) of Midland, Mich. Inokawa was down one stroke going into the final round, but he knew it was anyone's tournament to win.

His final round was like a rollercoaster. After making a double bogey on the second hole, Inokawa birdied the fourth hole. He followed that with a quadruple bogey on the par-5 sixth hole and then added two more bogeys making the turn in 7-over-par. Inokawa got things turned around on the back nine with an incredible eagle on the par-5 11th hole. He followed that with birdies on the 12th and 16th holes to close with a back nine score of 2-under-par 34. Inokawa finished with a tournament total of 154 on the weekend.

Inokawa stayed mentally strong over the course of the tournament. His mindset was to focus on the present and forget about the past. "I had more focus today and took it one shot at a time," he said.

Finishing in second place was Folkwein with a tournament total of 155. Chad Gehres (HHIJGA) of Brighton, Mich., took third place with a tournament score of 156. His score of 76 was the lowest score in the final round.

Lydia Gumm of Radcliff. Ky., won her second IJGT title of the 2012 season after putting together a solid tournament total of 156. After an opening score of 78, Gumm had a six stroke lead going into Sunday's final round at Callaway Gardens. She got off to a slow start making a triple bogey on the fourth hole; but she quickly turned things around with a birdie on the sixth hole.

On the back nine Gumm went on to make two more birdies en route to her victory. The Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens tested all aspects of Gumm's game, but it was her driver that allowed her to score well over the weekend. Gumm played significantly better on the back nine going 2-over-par in total compared to 10-over-par on the front nine.

"I struggled on the front nine, but pulled it together on the back nine both days," said Gumm when asked about her rounds this weekend.

Playing in her first IJGT tournament, Kelsi McKee of The Woodlands, Texas, took home second place with a tournament score of 168. In third place, also playing in her first IJGT tournament, was Angelica Harris of Harvey, La., with a tournament total of 184.

Prescott Butler (HHIJGA) of Locust Valley, N.Y., finally broke through with his first victory in the Boys 14 & Under Division with a tournament total of 177. Butler built a large lead after his first round and showed that he could handle the pressure of playing with the lead. He improved his score by five strokes in the final round, winning by an impressive margin of 18 strokes.

The highlight of Butler's round was his birdie on the difficult 16th hole at Callaway Gardens. Butler will look to build on this victory when he plays in his next IJGT tournament at The Memorial at Parris Island on March 24-25.

In second place was Brett Warkentin of Ridgeway, Ontario, with a tournament total of 195. Brandon Binford of Madison, Ala., finished in third place with a total score of 203.

The IJGT will travel back to Hilton Head Island, S.C., on March 17-18, 2012 for the IJGT Shamrock Shootout at Palmetto Hall. The St. Patrick's Day tournament will be held at the Robert Cupp course, which recently hosted an eGolf Tour event in February.
