Oh outlasts IJGT field at Moss Creek; Park wins girls division

The International Junior Golf Tour kicked off the Spring 2013 tour schedule with beautiful weather and a competitive field at Moss Creek Golf Club for the IJGT Winter Invitational. The two-day 36-hole competition featured players representing nine states and six countries battling the par-72 North Course for the title.

Seungtaek Oh of Seoul, South Korea captured the title of the Boys Division with a two-day total of 3-over-par 147. Oh began the event with a strong first round, capturing the coveted low first round KENTWOOL Low-Pro Award with a 1-over-par 73. The competition was not over, however, as three players in the division sat only a stroke back of Oh on the leaderboard following the first round.

With beautiful weather on his side, Oh began the final round with three straight pars but struggled with bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5 and a double-bogey on No. 12. His sole birdie on the front nine and his string of three straight birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 16 saved his final round and sealed his victory over the field.

In addition to an overall victory and the KENTWOOL Low-Pro Award, Oh also received the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for shooting a 2-over-par 74.

Finishing just behind Oh, and tied for the Clazic Belts Low Final Round award was Mickey Werenski of South Hadley, Mass. Werenski finished tied for second with Patrick Albanesi, of Avon, Conn., and Alan Cooke of Vienna, W.Va., all finishing 6-over-par 150.

In the Girls Division, Yesong Park of Seoul, South Korea took the victory finishing with a tournament total of 11-over-par 155. Park fired a strong 3-over-par 75 in the first round to take an early lead and the KENTWOOL Low-Pro Award.

During the final round, Park started strong with a birdie on No. 2 and then holed out for eagle from 125 yards on No. 3. Park struggled the rest of the round to get up-and-down but finished with an 8-over-par 80. This is Park’s first IJGT title.

Finishing behind Park was Clazic Belts Low Final Round award winner Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn. and Rei Nakatani of Tokyo, Japan both carding 18-over-par 162 for the event.

The IJGT will make its next stop in Harmony, Fla. for the Florida Swing at Harmony Golf Preserve Jan. 19-20. The Johnny Miller design will test all aspects of the golf game and should prove to be a great setting for the next IJGT event.
