Six-Hole Playoff Determines Winner at Oyster Reef

Some of the best junior golfers in the southeast gathered at Oyster Reef Golf Club on Hilton Head Island for the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT). At the end of the day, 36 holes weren’t enough to crown a winner in the Girls and Boys 15-19 Divisions.

In the Boys 15-19 Division 36 holes were not enough to decide a champion. Ewen Ferguson of Scotland and Zachary Boe of Bluffton, SC squared off in a six-hole playoff. Ferguson finished round one with a one-over-par 73, two strokes behind Boe’s 71 heading into round two. With the help of three birdies and five consecutive pars, Ferguson managed to close the gap, ending round two with a score of 73, and a 146 overall.  Boe overcame three straight bogeys in the final round with 7 straight pars under pressure to end with a 75 and tied with Ferguson.

Ferguson and Boe went toe to toe on five holes, each scoring par on all five. On the sixth hole, however, both players started off with wayward drives. Boe left the door wide open for Ferguson after missing a putt to bogey the hole. Ferguson would eventually make his putt for bogey, sealing his victory.

Rounding out the top three was Will Miles of Hilton Head Island, SC. with an overall score of 148. Miles shot a 72 on Sunday, earning him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

The Girls Division was also tied after 36 holes, but a champion was crowned after a one-hole playoff.  Rei Nakatani of Tokyo, Japan faced fellow competitor and friend, Bria Sanders of Cordova, Tenn. after both finished with tournament totals of 150.

Nakatani finished round one with a two over par 74, two strokes behind first place and one stroke ahead of Sanders’ 75.  Even though Nakatani would hold the lead for a few holes, Sanders wouldn’t let Nakatani out of her sights, and scored a crucial birdie on her 17th hole to close out with an overall score of 150, sending both players into a playoff.  In the one hole playoff, Nakatani capitalized on a missed birdie putt by Sanders by making her own putt for birdie and taking home the title.

Rounding out the Girls Division in a tie for third place were Cake Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand and Margine Arguello of Panama City, Panama who tied with an overall score of 151. Phuchanbanchob’s final round of 74 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Taking home the first place title in the Boys U-14 Division was 13-year old Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan.  This was Ogawa’s fifth appearance in an IJGT tournament this season. Ogawa last competed in the IJGT Georiga Open, where finished in a tie for second place.  Ogawa had a solid first round, shooting a 77 to give him the lead heading into round two. During round two, Ogawa would manage to hold on to his lead over the field with the help of three birdies and three consecutive pars to finish round two with a score of 74 and an overall score of 151.

Finishing in second was Daulet Tuleubayev of Almaty, Kazakhstan with an overall tournament score of 152. Rounding out the Boys U-14 Division in third was Kevin Ying of Shanghai, China with an overall tournament score of 168.

The IJGT will be hosting the second Major Championship of the season at Hampton Hall Country Club in Bluffton, SC on November 10-11.  To register for this event or any others, or for more information please visit www.IJGT.com or call (843) 785-2444.
