Smith Wins Title in Playoff; Schart Secures Victory in Girls Division

Durham, N.C. (April 1, 2012) – A talented field of junior golfers gathered in Durham, N.C. to compete in the 36-hole International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) College Classic at Duke University. The tournament was played at Duke Golf Club, which has hosted numerous college events including the 2001 Men’s NCAA Championship. Rain on Saturday made scoring difficult, however the final round proved to be just as challenging because of the undulating greens at Duke Golf Club.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, 36 holes were not enough to determine a winner. Jack Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., Shota Ozaki of Tokyo, Japan, and Sun Wongwaiwate of Chiang Mai, Thailand ended Sunday’s final round tied at 4-over-par 148. The playoff was held on the par-4, 18th hole at Duke Golf Club which was playing 440 yards on Sunday.

All players hit the fairway with their drives. Wongwaiwate and Ozaki, both Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) students, hit safely on the green, while Smith was just short of the green with his approach shot. Smith was the first in with par after getting up and down; however Wongwaiwate was not able to match that as he missed a three-foot putt for par. Ozaki calmly rolled in his two-foot par putt to extend the playoff.

Smith and Ozaki went back to the 18th hole for the second playoff hole. After placing his tee shot in the fairway, Smith placed his second shot within ten-feet for birdie. Ozaki missed the green right, but hit his third shot on the green to leave him with an outside chance at extending the playoff to a third hole. Smith, however, ended things by rolling in his putt for birdie in front of a crowd of more than 50 people.

Smith’s final round score of 74 included two birdies and four bogeys. Over the course of the weekend he relied on his length on the 6930 yard layout at Duke Golf Club. Smith played the par-5’s in 1-under-par. Finishing in a tie for second place were Ozaki and Wongwaiwate. Ozaki carded a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday which earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Carolin Schart (HHIJGA) of Vilshofen, Germany lead wire-to-wire in the Girls Division giving Schart her first IJGT victory of the 2011-2012 season. Her tournament total of 148 included a final round score of 1-under-par 71. This was the low round of the tournament in any division, and it also gave her the coveted Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Schart started off the final round well, playing her first eight holes in 2-under-par. She stumbled after making a double-bogey and two bogeys in her next four holes, but quickly rebounded by making a birdie on No. 5 – her 14th hole of the day. The highlight of the round for Schart was on the 6th hole at Duke Golf Club where she made eagle after holing out her second shot from 130 yards. This provided her a little cushion from her fellow competitors coming down the stretch. Things got interesting when Yi Chen Liu (HHIJGA) of Taoyuan, Taiwan made an eagle of her own on No.7, but a double-bogey on No. 8 gave Schart a three stroke lead she would not relinquish.

“I holed a lot of putts and my short game was really good,” commented Schart when asked about her keys to success this weekend.

Liu finished in second place with a tournament total of 151. In third place was Moyu Sasaki of Tokyo, Japan who recorded a tournament score of 157.

Chase Roswall of Bristol, Tenn., repeated as Champion in the Boys 14 & Under Division after putting together scores of 75 and 77 this weekend. Roswall’s first round score of 3-over-par 75 was very impressive considering the rainy conditions all golfers played in on Saturday. He made four birdies on the day and played the par-5’s in 2-under-par.

Playing with the lead was not new for Roswall, and he handled it well on Sunday by playing conservative golf and not allowing himself to make any large numbers on his scorecard. His lone birdie of the day came on No. 2 which was his 11th hole of the round. Roswall will look to keep his winning streak alive at the IJGT Jelly Bean Open at Hershey Links next weekend weekend in Hummelstown, Pa.

When asked about the difference between this weekend’s victory at Duke and his first one at the IJGT Shamrock Shootout Roswall said, “I played a little more consistently. I was getting it on the green quickly.”

In second place was Masato Yoshitsugu (HHIJGA) of Aichi, Japan with a tournament score of 156. In third place was Tennoshin Ogawa (HHIJGA) of Inchinomiya-shi, Japan after finishing with a tournament total of 158.

Next week the IJGT will return to the West Coast for the Arizona Junior at Wigwam presented by AB Golf Designs. The event will be played on the Gold Course at Wigwam Resort which is located in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The IJGT will make its next Southeast stop in Wesley Chapel, Fla., on April 21-22, 2012 for the IJGT Florida Swing at Saddlebrook Resort.

Final round results of the IJGT College Classic at Duke University conducted by the International Junior Golf Tour completed April 1, 2012.
