Spencer-White Wins IJGT Major at Hampton Hall

Some of the best junior golfers in the country, including 17 players in the Golfweek Top 400, gathered for the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Major Championship Event at Hampton Hall Club. Despite changing weather conditions and a race against the sunset each day, many of the competitors were able to post impressive scores.

Taking home the first place title in the Boys 15-19 Division was 16-year-old Charlie Spencer-White of Bluffton, S.C. Spencer-White finished round one of the tournament 3-under-par, placing himself in first place with a narrow one stroke lead. Spencer-White remained consistent and did not let the pressure of a small lead get to him. With the help of three birdies and five consecutive pars, Spencer-White managed to keep his lead intact. He finished round two with a score of 1-over-par 73 and a tournament total of 2-under-par 142 overall.

The victory was extra special for Spencer-White as this was his first IJGT victory since March 2012 at Palmetto Hall. “It feels really good to get my confidence level up again,” he said.

Taking second place was Matt Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan with an overall score of 1-under-par 143. Rounding out the Boys 15-19 Division was Manuel Velez of Panama City, Panama with an overall score of even-par 144.

Velez, Cheng, and Patrick Albanesi of Avon, Conn. shot a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday, which earned them the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. The award is given to the player(s) who records the lowest score during the final round.

In the Girls Division 18-year-old Olivia Landino of Hermitage, Pa impressed the gallery on her way to victory. In order to capture the first place title, Landino would have to beat a slew of outstanding players. During round one, Landino shot an even-par 72, leaving her in a tie for first place with Thamonpat Siriko of Bangkok, Thailand. With the help of an incredible eight birdies and four consecutive pars, Landino blew away any chance of defeat with a score of 7-under-par 65.

It was a fight the entire day in the final Girls Division group. After 12 holes the group was a combined 14-under-par. “It was really nerve racking because Clementina shot 5-under-par the first nine and I was only 2-under-par, said Landino.

Finishing in a tie for second place were Clementina Rodriguez of Caracas, Venezuela and Ana Paula Valdes of Morelia, Mexico with overall scores of 3-under-par 141.

Landino’s 65 is the lowest score recorded on the 2012-13 IJGT Season, and gave her a the well-deserved Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Taking home the first place title in the Boys 14 & Under Division was 12-year-old William Thomson of Pittsford, N.Y.  The IJGT Major at Hampton Hall was the first southeast tournament of the season for Thomson, having played in numerous northeast tournaments this season. Round one proved to be a solid outing for Thomson, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to give him a three stroke lead heading into Sunday. During the second round, Thomson would manage to hold onto his lead over the competition with the help of a birdie and five consecutive pars to finish round two with a score of 4-over-par 76 and an overall score of 149.

“When people around me are playing well it drives me to play better,” said Thomson when he talked about playing in the final group on Sunday.

Finishing in second place was Graydon Kent of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., with an overall tournament score of 151. Rounding out the Boys 14 & Under Division in third was Andre Beccera of Zapopan, Mexico with an overall tournament score of 152.
