Zachary Martin Tames Eagle's Pointe Lydia Gumm Impressive in Victory

The Davis Love III designed Eagle's Pointe Golf Club was the battle grounds for many of the top junior golfers in the nation this weekend at the Winter Shootout at Eagle's Pointe, the 36-hole International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Event.  The competition was heated all weekend long and many of the division races came down to the last 9 holes. Despite the tight fairways and undulating greens found at Eagle's Pointe, many of the juniors were able to post very impressive scores.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Zachary Martin of Pinehurst, N.C., separated himself from the rest of the field early this weekend. He opened the tournament up with a bogey-free first round score of 2-under-par 69 and maintained the lead from that point forward. He finished with a final round score of 74, for a two-day total of 1-over-par 143.

Martin only hit driver a total of two times in the first round and credits his success over the weekend to "keeping the big dog in the bag." He mentioned that a birdie in the final round at the challenging 11th hole gave him the momentum to finish strong and take home the championship.

Finishing in second place this weekend was Evan Smith from Bluefield, W.V. Smith, a Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) student, played consistently well with solid rounds of 74 and 75 for a two-round total of 7-over-par 149.

Rounding out the top three was Shosei Inokawa (HHIJGA) from Atamishi, Japan who posted a first round score of 75 and a final round score of 76, giving him a two-day total of 151.

Joshua Allen of Wilson, N.C. was crowned the Boys 14 & Under Division Champion after playing two consistent rounds of 75 and 76 for a nine-over-par 151.  Going into the second round, Allen had a one stroke lead over Shogo Ito (HHIJGA) of Tokyo, Japan.  Allen saw that lead disappear after the first hole as Ito carded the first of three birdies on the round.  However, Allen gathered himself and finished the day with two birdies himself as they both carded the two lowest rounds of their Division.

Ito shot a 76 on the first day and added a 78 on the second day to finish twelve-over-par 154 and second place.  Lohith Ramaraju  (HHIJGA) of London, England rounded out the top three with a 77-79 on the weekend for a 14-over-par total.

One way that Allen was able to come out victorious was his play on the par-5's where he shot 1-under-par for the tournament.  Joshua also credits his play on the par-3 third hole as the hole that provided the momentum to finish out the final round victorious.  "I just came off a bad stretch of holes and I made a birdie there and it kind of gave me a little more effort to put forth towards the round."

Playing in her first IJGT event, Lydia Gumm of Radcliff, Ky. dominated the course by firing a tournament total of 1-under-par.  Gumm made her 141 tournament total seem easy by playing the par 5's at a solid 2-under-par.  Gumm had a great round on Saturday carding a score 72, which came from finishing out even-par on the back 9 at Eagle's Pointe.

Starting the final round in first place, Gumm never let off the gas by finishing up the tournament with an impressive 2-under-par 69.  When asked what hole the momentum changed for her, she said "number 11 because it was my first birdie of the day because it got me pumped up for the rest of the round" (the Girls Division started their rounds on hole 10).

Finishing in second place in the Girls Division was Moyu Sasaki (HHIJGA) of Tokyo, Japan, with a tournament total of 146.  Tying for third place with a tournament total of 148 was Saya Aono from Hokuto-shi, Japan and Ayaka Nakayama (HHIJGA) from Kanagawa, Japan.

The IJGT would like to thank the coaches from the University of Tennessee Women's Golf and the University of South Carolina Women's Golf teams for catching the action over the weekend.

The IJGT would also like to thank MacNeill Engineering Worldwide, owner of CHAMP athletic products, for their support of junior golf.  Through the partnership with the Junior Sports Corporation, CHAMP will distribute logoed tees to each participant at all 50 regular season IJGT events, and spikes to winners in each division: Boys 15-19, Boys U-14 and Girls U-19.

The #1 Brand on Tour®, CHAMP's technologically-advanced cleats have provided superior traction and stability on the footwear of 27 of golf's last 33 major tournament winners. The company's spikes are also worn by the world's top-ranked player, who recently became the first to win the PGA and European Tour money titles in the same season.

The IJGT will make its next stop at Innisbrook Resort for a two day event on January 28-29.  The winners of the Boys 15-19 Division, the Girls Division, and the Boys U-14 also qualified for the season ending Tournament of Champions at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL.
