Houston - Gulf Coast About Houston - Gulf Coast

The nation’s fourth-largest city has a sizeable tradition when it comes to golf.

Byron Nelson won the first Houston TOUR event conducted by the Houston Golf Association in 1946. He bested Ben Hogan and Sam Snead at River Oaks Country Club. Records show that it was the only time those Hall of Fame players ever finished 1-2-3 in a tournament.

Houston has been conducting a PGA TOUR event since 1946, making the tournament the 10th oldest on the schedule. This year’s Shell Houston Open will serve as the lead-in to the Masters.

The growing number of golf courses contributes to a healthy Houston economy that has a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics and technology; only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters.

With everything experiencing growth in Houston, especially the golf industry, there hasn’t been a better time to stay and play in the largest city within the state of Texas.
